academic tip #3: yes, a very simple advice that mostly everyone is already doing when taking notes, but don’t underestimate it!!!! cognitive psychology provides evidence that when you highlight or write a key word in a different color, you are most likely going to remember it better since it is made distinct. so if you highlight a lot of words/phrases, it’s not distinct anymore, therefore removing the effect of the highlight.
academic tip #6: visualizing works best when trying to memorize.
what does that mean? when we study, for example, we often just read the same sentence over and over to memorize and possibly understand. that’s rehearsal! however, if we visualize the meaning of that sentence, we understand it better. we process the information better and retain the information.
how to apply it? let’s look at studying the brain: we can study the parts of it by saying “the amygdala is a center that shows fears and phobias.” you can read that sentence over and over to memorize it. BUT if we visualize the amygdala while visualizing a personal fear of yours, you will understand better what the amygdala is and remember it better.
academic tip #4: cognitive psychology research states that studying before you sleep and after you wake up is the most effective way to retain information!!! i personally do this and i agree, it helps! try not to use your phone or watch tv, etc. when you do this bc it lessens the effectiveness
academic tip #1: color code your paragraphs! it helps you organize your essay, having a different color for each topic mentioned in your thesis. this will let you know that each paragraph connects to your thesis statement.
and we’re back with the academic tips!!!
academic tip #5: “ In massed practice, you do a whole lot of practice, a whole lot of memorizing things all at once, maybe for a long study session. In spaced practice, you have much shorter study sessions that are spread out over time.” so avoid cramming and procrastinating! you’ll do a whole lot better if you space out your studying.
