Armani grew up in the London Borough of Hackney. Her family consisted of herself, her mother and father, and two older half brothers. Her brothers were her best friends growing up. They’d look after her whenever her mum and dad were working. They’d walk her to school, take her to the park when she asked, and even let her dress them up and play house. None of the other kids at school would dare mess with Armani, they knew her brothers wouldn’t let anybody hurt their little sister and get away with it. The Carr family weren’t rich, far from it, but they loved each other. Her mother worked two jobs, and her father worked almost constantly, so her brothers had to practically raise her.
It was clear from a young age that Armani was clever, more than clever, she was a mini genius. She took a liking to wildlife and flowers, all the things that didn’t surround her in the urban London area. They had a small park near their tower block, but that was it as greenery went. They never had much money, but her parents would always find enough to buy her flowers and seeds. Young Armani’s bedroom became a small jungle in no time. She treated her flowers like her pets, always remembering to water them, to make sure they got enough sun. She was going to be a botanist when she grew up. She’d know everything about plants and flowers if she could.
As Armani got older her love for plants and flowers didn’t weaken. However, she wasn’t the little girl who needed to be protected by her brothers anymore. Quick to defend herself, with a loud mouth, Armani was more than capable at protecting herself, and the people around her. Other kids at her high school knew that you didn’t mess with Armani, or the people close to her, because you didn’t want to be a person on the wrong side of Armani Carr. It was at this time in her life that Armani’s interest in plants grew passed just growing them, it became about the environment as well. Armani was single-handedly responsible for getting recycling bins for her entire high school. She’d have the whole world recycling if she had her way. She stopped eating meat, and started to ride her brother’s old bike everywhere instead of taking the bus. Armani’s environmental activism took up all of her time outside of school, when she wasn’t studying anyway.
When her exams came around she didn’t leave her room for weeks upon weeks, she studied non-stop. She was going to get the grades to get into a top university and she was going to study biology so that one day she could leave London and explore the jungles of the world. It was a big dream for a girl from Hackney. Nobody in her family had ever been to university before, if Armani could get in she’d be the first. She’d done the work and it had payed off. Armani passed all of her exams with flying colours. She wasn’t going to get into a good university. Armani’s reality came crashing down on her like a ton of bricks. She came home one day to find her mother in tears. Armani stood in their small kitchen as she listened to her mother cry to her father about how they couldn’t afford to look after Armani while she was at university. She listened as she broke her heart over how their little girl would be in debt for the rest of her life. Armani knew she would have to think again about her plans. She didn’t want to not go to university though. Maybe it would have to be a cheaper one, that offered helped to students with financial difficulties. Or maybe she just wouldn’t go to university after all. Armani decided get a job in London, just in a small cafe. If she saved up enough money to get her through her first year she’d apply to a university. It took most of the summer, but finally Armani felt like she had saved up enough money for herself. She applied to the only university that was cheap and taking applicants this late into the summer. City University
