Every semester, a few students disappear. No emails. No assignments. No engagement.
Then they resurface during finals week asking if they can “make up the work.”
They didn’t just miss assignments. They missed the learning. The struggle. The conversations. The growth that only happens by showing up.
It’s a metaphor for so much of life. People want relationships without cultivating connection. Titles without responsibility. Outcomes without investment.
As we head into a new year, it’s worth asking: What do you want? and are you willing to do what it requires to sustain it?
Desire is easy. Participation is the work.
