Disabled and Denied: Accessible Public Transport in Scotland is a second-class experience (literally)

This afternoon, I was publicly denied a public service. A bus. Something we all use nearly every day to get around. I was denied for a simple reason; because I am disabled.

Hey all random question, I’m flying soon and I’m going to be bringing my rollator. The last time I brought my rollator it got damaged (the brake lines and a wheel. Had to replace it- it was beyond fixing) even when I threw a hissy fit so bad the captain got involved bc they wouldn’t store it on the plane like they had said when I called. I flew with Fronter, they ended up saying the straps were built for wheelchairs so my rollator had to go into the cargo bin.

My question is which airlines have yall had the most luck with, and are best with accommodations? Are there any airlines where they won’t put my rollator in the cargo bin? I can’t replace my rollator if she gets damaged, and I would like to try and avoid it at all costs as I’m in an active medical emergency and can’t deal with medical equipment failing rn. Any other tips or suggestions will be appreciated too!!

“One of the most impressive things I’ve found during our trip around the US has been the consistent implementation of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), particularly when it comes to buses. Back in London, I am refused access to buses on a regular basis; either the bus has a pushchair taking up the wheelchair space, or the ramp is broken. Sometimes, the driver simply can't be bothered to get the ramp out. Discrimination on public transport is something I've just come to accept. In many, many other parts of the U.K., wheelchair users simply cannot use buses at all. This video was filmed in Lake Tahoe, a small, rural, sparsely-populated 'city' on the border between Nevada and California. None of the bus drivers we met had needed to operate the wheelchair lift before, but the lift was still installed and functioning, ready and waiting for someone like me. As with every other bus we've used in the US, there were not one but two designated wheelchair spaces onboard - plenty of space for other wheelchair users, or pushchairs. I can't express what a relief it is to wait at a bus stop knowing you won't have to fight to get on; knowing the driver both can and will help you board. (Of course, when we got to our destination, the Tahoe Mountain Brewing Company, they had access too. Because everyone does.)” - @abbisigns

Up up up! 🔝 “Today was incredible. The main reason to come to Melbourne was to see the penguin parade on Phillip island. There’s no photography or video allowed there so can’t share but have a look on Google at the incredible experience of seeing these incredible birds in the wild less than a meter away from you. . I can however show you how my experience was enhanced by the incredible accessibility provided by @grayline_sightseeing the lift to get into their coach and the friendly driver meant I could enjoy the day just the same as if I wasnt disabled. . The lift shown here meant I was on and off quickly so no time wasted at each stop. They actually book 4 spaces for 1 wheelchair user so make a loss, but more than happy to accommodate which is fantastic. .
