One of my new online friends has a couple of my same disabilities. However, while I've come a long way in my journey and always use specific mobility aids (rollator, cane, wheelchair) and switch it out depending on my abilities that day, he refuses to use any mobility aid for shame and wanting that this isn't really his life.

It takes a lot of work to be able to accept yourself. So no matter where you are on this spectrum of mobility aids, know that you are loved.

This is agorableism.

It’s not embarrassing to use a mobility aid in public. For many people, thats the reason why they can be in public at all! It can be dangerous to shame someone for using a disability aid, heightening the risk of them not using that aid and worsening related conditions.

Mobility aids are cool. Thats the takeaway.

Writer Question: Physical Disabilities

So I'm wanting to write characters that have prosthetic limbs and/or use various mobility aids. My goal with writing is to offer at least some representation, in whatever way I can. I'm not sure how to go about asking so I thought to create a post, thinking it would be a great learning experience. If you are comfortable with answering, please feel free to interact.

What are some things that you wish able-bodied folks understood?

What are some challenges that you face? This can be season/temperature related, politics, demographics, what have you. Whatever comes to mind and feel free to be as in-depth as you want.

Tell me about anything about your experiences as an amputee/physically disabled person. Positive experiences, negative experiences, whatever it is that you are comfortable with sharing. What would you like to read about in a book? What would you like to have for representation?

Storytime / General ramble

I went in for a new cane. Im chronically ill and hunting for a diagnosis from my doctor suspected to have Fibromyalgia, HEDS or POTs.so i struggle with walking. A cane somewhat helps but i still need to sit all the time and even standing triggers a flare up for me that can take days to recover.

I got recommended this wheelchair from the seller which i was reluctant to try because i can technically walk somewhat fine.

I really liked it.

But i stuck with buying crutches for now.. which dont get me wrong they feel way better than the walking cane but im still standing and that hurts.

But wheelchairs are SO expensive. So im gonna wait and see if my doctor thinks id benefit from one. Though im always shy to mention my mobility stuff. Heck its gotten to the point i barely use my aids and end up triggering horrible flare ups bc im scared of being judged.

But yeah today was kinda funky.

been talking to some friends about how i think they would benefit from a mobility aid and its becoming increasingly clear like Oh. you don't See me as a Human who you Respect. that's why you don't want to Help YourSelf. you fear being One Of Me. OkaY. Very Cool.

UPDATE: I have been able to purchase the wheelchair!!!! Thank you so much everyone truly I did not expect to get enough. I really felt the love. I will post pics once it arrives!

I do not like to ask for money. But I am in desperate need of a wheelchair. I can not walk without becoming incredibly sick, and can not afford even a basic wheelchair at the moment.
