French based company Accrorap, led by Kader Attou, performs The Roots, a visually striking work for eleven men, at The Joyce Theater this from 23 January to 28 January 2018. This spellbinding French troupe combines hip hop, circus arts, and contemporary dance to thrilling effect. For its Joyce debut, the company performs The Roots, a visually striking work for eleven men that “explodes in your face like a shaken can of soda.” (Le Monde) Spectacular and poetic, nostalgic and innovative, the dance looks backward as it glides forward. Set to music that varies from electronica to Brahms, The Roots delves into the origins of hip hop, but the stellar dancing—which The New York Times called “marvelous in synchronization, skill and fearless exactitude”—is all about the future of this electric form.
The performances at The Joyce Theater are part of a U.S. tour of The Roots, supported by Institut français, Région Nouvelle Aquitaine, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S., and FUSED–French-U.S. Exchange in Dance program.
