Amon was actually the firebender who killed Mako and Bolin's parents and Asami's mom. Aang punished him by taking away his bending. Now he's looking for a way to get it back. Then he himself learned how to take away bending, but not really permanently. And now hes banking on the new Avatar Korra to find a way to bring the bending back of his victims and then he wants to force her to bring his bending back (that's why she's last) and the sob story and Equalist thing is all a front.

Korra will be forced to choose between saving the city from the Equalist revolution, or leaving republic city to answer the call of her Avatar duties. When/if she returns, Republic City will become an open war-zone, completely in disrepair with Chi-Blockers and benders dog-fighting each other every second street.
