That actually reminds me of my own reread, and a realization I had when rereading the convo between Karkat and John on Vriska’s computer., specifically here: https://www.homestuck.com/story/3867 I remember the impression I had gotten the first time reading it (‘holy shit did Karkat kill Gamzee?’) but reading it again gave a different impression. 1/ See, Kat’s whole way of talking there says that Gamzee ‘was’ his best friend, and not the way you’d talk if said best friend was just upgraded to moirail. He continues to talk about how Gamzee did some shitty stuff, killed some people, but he ‘liked him a lot’. I saw the pale gamkar potential too (although I don’t build ships so much as look at other people’s blueprints and go, ‘oh, that ship will hold up, I’ll use that design’) but even after that whole incident, he talks more like he thinks 2/ that he’s ruined any chance he had with his crush. The specific dialogue that caught my eye in the reread was this: “CG: JOHN, TRUST ME. YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND. CG: IT'S JUST A TROLL THING, HUMANS WOULDN'T GET IT. CG: YOU MIGHT THINK I WAS A SHIT HEAD, AND I CAN'T DEAL WITH THAT NOW ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, SO LET'S DROP IT.” Very specifically, “you might think I was a shithead’. See, this was after I’d had some time to fully process “Pale romance is still romance and pale intimacy is still 3/ intimate” and it occurred to me that on his end that must have felt like taking advantage of Gamzee, who was not his moirail, and was in a highblood rage and therefore in no condition to make a decision like that. In this situation, there’s technically the excuse of “he would have killed everyone if I didn’t”, and it seems more like kissing than anything more serious, but it would still felt wrong and shitty to Karkat, and was, from the perspective of troll society, at the very least dubcon. 4/4

It’s been a very long time since I’ve thought about this ship at all, but I seem to remember that my first read of that conversation was “Karkat killed Gamzee and is afraid John won’t understand that” and the second read was “Karkat didn’t kill Gamzee and was afraid that John won’t understand that”.  I do see where you’re coming from, but IIRC at that point Gamzee was writing little notes to Karkat via memos asking him to come stop him, so I don’t think there would have been a consent issue there (unless the rage really does make people unable to consent, which... hmm.  Maybe there is some interesting brain chemical thing that causes that state?)  But I think in most societies when someone has killed multiple people, whether or not they consent to actions which will stop them from killing more people is just not that important.  Also remember that Karkat’s first attempt to stop Gamzee was to send Equius to kill him, and maybe that was just because he was afraid, but it was his first choice of resolution for this problem.
