English Literature was your jam. You loved to read, Classics, Romance, Mystery. You name it you’ve probably read it.
Which was why in the back of your English literature class you didn’t feel guilty not paying attention. Instead you found yourself staring at the back of one Peter Parkers head.
You sighed to yourself. You were so out of his league. You weren’t exactly a super genius in science like nearly everyone else at this school but you did your best. Peter would probably want someone typically smart like him. At least that’s what you’d convinced yourself judging by the people he liked in the past anyway.
It didn’t stop you from imagining what it would be like to smooth down a stray strand of his hair. What it would be like if he held you close and leant in…
The school bell snapped you out of your thoughts.
“I want your practice papers on Dracula in by Friday please.” Your teacher shouted over the students gathering their things. You hung back a little watching Peter collect everything into his binder. A little harshly by the looks of things. You wondered what he was annoyed about.
“Yo! Penis Parker! Where’s your girlfriend? Don’t tell me she’s fictional!” Flash started yelling across the classroom. You rolled your eyes used to his stupid words by now.
“Shut up flash you only tease Peter because you don’t even have a penis.” You hiss at him. Flash rounds on you.
“Oh? What would a stupid girl like you know? Why are you even at this school Y/n? I thought idiots weren’t allowed at this school.” You bit your lip. His words weren’t untrue per say. But boy they sure stung.
“Yeah that’s what I thought.” Flash said after a moment of silence. He strode off looking proud of himself. You huffed and snatched up your folder. As you were about to go out the door you felt a tap on your shoulder. You turned to find Peter. Your mind races. Oh god what did he want? Did he want to ridicule you too?
“Thanks for sticking up for me.” You smile. Trying not to make it obvious that your heart was racing a thousand miles a minute even if you were relieved that he didn’t want to tease you.
“Don’t mention it. Flash is just a bully no one deserves to be talked down to.” You turn and start to make your way to your locker. Peter easily keeps pace beside you.
“Then why did you let him talk to you like that?” You shrug.
“It’s not really a secret that My science grades aren’t the best Peter.” He raises an eyebrow.
“Your English grades are top of the class though. You aren’t stupid.” You smile a little at that. At least someone noticed.
“Sure but I don’t think it really matters. Science is what people really care about here.” You make it too your locker and start grabbing your things to go home.
“Then maybe we could help each other out?” You shake your head.
“What?”
“I need help in English. I just don’t get half of the work she gives us. I don’t really understand the whole book to begin with and if you help me, I’ll tutor you in science.” You look to the side at Peter. His face pleading with you to agree. You wouldn’t be able to say no to Peter if you wanted to. Damn your stupid schoolgirl crush.
“Okay. When do you want to start?” Peter’s face lit up with a smile and your heart swooned.
You couldn’t help but feel that today had gone agonizingly slow. You’d both agreed yesterday that you would study Tuesday and Wednesday. You’d help Peter get from B to an A and he would help you get from C to at least a B+ or so you hoped.
All you’d been doing was wishing the day was over. Even prompting Betty to ask you why you were distracted when you sat with her at lunch. So now here you were end of the day, a nervous wreck. The bell rang.
“Crap” You hissed at yourself. You were not ready to make a fool of yourself. Still you picked yourself up and walked to your locker. You organized the books you needed and shoved them neatly into your bag. Then you walked across the hall to Peter’s locker where you’d said you’d meet him.
“Hey Y/n ready to go?” He asked shutting his locker.
“Sure.” You silently followed him out of the school.
What did people usually do in these situations? Oh man. You really were in deep.
“So… You hang around with Ned a lot.” You begin hoping you don’t sound too cringey.
“Yeah. We’ve known each other forever.” You smiled.
“Must be nice to have a friend like that.” Peter raised an eyebrow at you.
“Yeah. But you and Betty seem pretty close.” You smile.
“She’s a good friend yeah but I’ve only known her a little while. I didn’t exactly have the best time making friends in my last school and when I came here it took me a month to even go up and talk to anyone.”
“Why? You’re really nice.” You shrug.
“I… Uh… Well. I’m not exactly the best conversationalist to begin with and I just get nervous.” You fidget with the strap of your bag.
“Well I like you. You don’t have to work hard to win my friendship.” After that it went a little smoother. You stopped in at a sandwich shop – called Delmar’s you found out later- and got snacks then headed up to Peters apartment.
“I don’t think my Aunt May is home yet so we can use the kitchen table.” He said turning the key in the lock.
Peter’s apartment is nice. Everything is homely you find. You could imagine Peter living here.
“Make yourself at home.” He says dropping his keys in a bowl by the door. You make your way over to the table and start to lay out your English work.
“So where do you want to start?” He laughed a little.
“The beginning please! I just don’t understand any of the metaphors.” You nod.
“It all boils down to a vampire threatening the foundations of Victorian society and the men rising up to defeat the ‘evil’ vampire doing so.” Peter frowned.
“yeah… I’m lost” You shake your head and sit down on the sofa where Peter has sprawled himself out.
“Okay so Dracula basically is the main threat of the book right?” Peter nods.
“There’s pretty much three things the book presents as being a threat to the men fighting against Dracula. One is the threat of modern advances becoming irrelevant against ancient evils. Second is Cristian salvation. The woman are the third. How woman being ‘sexy’ is looked down upon. It’s sexist as all heck but it’s a classic.” Peter shook his head.
“How do you even figure this stuff out? Like there’s no real answers.” You giggle a bit at that.
“You can’t approach it like math. There’s no right or wrong answer to anything really. It’s all about what you interpret from the text.” The rest of the discussion went really smooth. You were in your element explaining all the themes and characters actions. You barely even noticed the time going by.
“Hey Peter I’m home.” A woman says coming through the door.
“Aunt May. This is Y/n. She was helping me with English.” You wave politely at her.
“Hi. Nice to meet you.” She gives you a friendly smile.
“You too. Are you staying for dinner?” You shook your head.
“Oh thank you for the offer but my family’s expecting me back…” You look up at the clock “Oh really soon. I should get going!” You start gathering your stuff.
“Next time then?” Ms Parker asks you.
“Sure. Me and Peter are studying again tomorrow.” She smiles.
“Great! I’ll cook!” Peter made a face at that. You laughed at his grimace.
“I’ll walk you home.” Peter offers.
“Oh… you don’t…” Peter holds a hand up to cut you off.
“It’s getting late Y/n. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.”
“Okay then.” The walk back to your place wasn’t too far luckily. There was a comfortable silence between the two of you and every time Peters hand accidentally brushed yours you felt electric tingles run through your fingers. It feels too soon when you arrive on your doorstep.
“This is me,” You say pointing at your house. “Thanks for walking me.” Peter smiled and rocked on his toes slightly.
“Wouldn’t want a smart girl like you getting into trouble.” You laughed.
“I’m stupid not Smart Peter.” He took a step towards you. You could feel his breath on your face now.
“You aren’t stupid. You’re very clever. No one holds a candle to you Y/n.” He starts leaning in when Your mother opened the door. You sprang apart like your feet were on fire.
“There you are! Thank you for walking her home.” You mother smiled at Peter.
“Oh no problem. Anyway I’ll see you tomorrow yeah?” He asks looking hopeful with those doe eyes of his.
“Of course! Have a nice night Peter.” With that you went inside.
In your opinion the next night of studying goes well. The first half of the session you finish up with the English lesson you gave yesterday. That was when May came home and started on dinner. You’re now nervous about where to even start on Science.
“So what do you wanna start with?” You sigh and glance around the room. You can’t even face Peter.
“I guess Physics since that’s the hardest.” Peter runs a hand through his hair.
“Sure. Here let me see your notes so I can see what we need to work on.” You pass him your notes hesitantly. You bite your lip as you watch him read through them.
“That aren’t too bad.” You shake your head.
“Yes they are. They’re all over the place.” He grimaces and sucks in air though his teeth.
“Yeah. They are.” You wave your arms to exaggerate your point.
“Yeah! I’m lost!”
“I can see how with how unorganized these are. Here we can use my notes. I’ll take you through them all.” So you spend the next hour going through all his notes and revising the stuff you’d already tried to learn.
“You make everything seem so easy.” You sigh rubbing your temples.
“Nah. You just never had it explained to you like this.” You turn to Peter and smile.
“You’re a great teacher Peter. What would I do without you?” Peter shuffles closer.
“You would drown in notes that’s what.” You giggle. The urge to smooth down a stray curl on his head rises in you. Your hand gets halfway before you realize what you’re doing. You pull it back and smooth your own hair back instead.
“Let’s take a break. We’ve been at it for ages.” You groan.
“Sure. I think dinner is almost ready.” Peter says poking your nose. He stands up and offers you a hand. You take it giddy you get to hold his hand if only for a second. He pulls you up a tad too fast though and you stumble into him. His strong arms are there to steady you though. When you look up at him he has that doe eyed look from last night. You start to lean up when…
“Dinner’s ready guys!” May says cheerily from the doorway to the kitchen. Peter drops his arms and you both turn to face her.
“Sure May we’ll be there in a sec.” glancing at Peter his cheeks seem a bit red. You’re sure your face is the same.
“This is really good!” You says commenting on May’s lasagna.
“Yeah this is actually edible!” Peter receives a smack on the back of his head from May for that comment.
“Thank you Y/n I’m glad you like it.” You smile.
“Peter’s just bitter cause he can’t cook.” You say smirking at him.
“Hey don’t gang up on me!”
“Us girls gotta stick together Peter!” You say nudging him with your elbow.
“So how long have you been together?” May asks. You nearly choke on a piece of garlic bread.
“May we aren’t going out.” Peter says giving May a look you can’t discern.
“That’s a shame. You could use someone like Y/n to keep you in check.” She says winking at you. You sip your water and smile at her.
When dinner is done you offer to wash up and Peter volunteers to dry. You quickly collect the plates and take them to the kitchen. You start the water running.
“I’m sorry about her.” Peter says following you into the kitchen.
“Oh no. Don’t worry about it.” You start to scrub the plates clean.
“She’s always trying to find me a girlfriend.” He sighs picking out a clean tea towel from the drawer.
“Why don’t you have one?” You try to come off as asking an innocent question. Though your heart is racing to hear his answer.
“Guess I haven’t found anyone I want to go out with yet.” Your heart drops a little.
“No crushes then?” He laughs a bit.
“I didn’t say that. There’s this one girl I like. Though I don’t know how she feels.” You nod solemn wondering who the lucky girl could be. Then you get an idea in your head. You start flicking water at Peter.
“Hey!” He says laughing holding up the tea towel to his defense. He inches closer and eventually grabs your wrists leaving yourself trapped between him and the counter.
“You got me.” He grins.
“Are you always this mischievous?” He teases. Feeling bold you reply.
“Only with people I like.” Peters eyes have a twinkle in them. You stare entranced by them. You don’t realize he’s leaning in until…
“Why is there water all over the floor?”
Next Monday
The bell rings and you jump up to race over to Peters desk. You’d been waiting all day to find out what he got in English.
“So… show me!” You say excitedly. Peter grins and pushes his paper towards you. Your eyes flick to the top.
“Oh my gosh that’s amazing Peter!” An A+ sat proudly at the top.
“No you’re an amazing teacher. Come on then show me Thursday’s test results.” You pulled the paper out of your bag and set it down.
“So you’re definitely not stupid. You just didn’t have the right teacher.” An A- was a massive leap from where you had been a week ago.
“You’re the best Peter. Now all you need is a girlfriend and you’ll be perfect in May’s eyes.” You joked. Looking around the room everyone had cleared out. Peter stood up.
“Oh I think I have an idea for that one.” You held your breath.
“You do? Please do tell.” Peter stepped closer.
“I think I just need to show her.” With that Peter leaned down and kissed you. It took you a second but you kissed back with enthusiasm. It was everything you imagined, Peter’s lips were soft and his hands held your arms gently. You giggled when he pulled away.
“I think I should help you study more often if that’s the reward I get”
