Tips on shading with just black ink on paper?
There are a few factors when it comes to shading with ink: Spacing, Weight and Pen Size.
This image has examples of all 3. This person used a .003, .35 and 1.0 pen size. The thicker the lines are the more condensed it becomes and that means the darker the shading will be.
When it comes to spacing, the more lines you add, as well as the thickness factor in how dark and dense that part of the drawing will be. Less lines will signify light.
And then line weight. I always reccomend that after you finish lining a piece, figure out where you want the light source to be and then reapply lines over parts of the drawing you want to be shaded and darker with a thicker pen. It will add more depth.
While I know you said specifically with black ink I just want to say the Uniball Tropical White pen is super good for highlights if you want opaque white lines.
I hope you find this helpful!
