(1/2) about all this u.s. centricims thing: I, as a European, never thought that what happens in the US is unimportant; on the contrary, I learned a lot, like A LOT I wouldn't have known/understood otherwise. But on the other hand, to me, it feels more like that we are overlooked, that our issues aren't as highlighted, as discussed. You said it yourself, tumblr is an American platform and you don't see many posts about European issues. But I see them. These posts have very few notes, though.
(2/2) I understand that the comparison fails there. What is a „simple plane crash“ against a civil rights movement starting? The main point (and what I believe Maria tried to convey) is that we are not taken seriously. We are forced American point of view and standards on everything and we are being put down for demanding to be seen on a site that’s all about equal representation. Your issues ARE important but so are ours, that's all I have to say.
I understand what you’re saying, but do you think us Americans started out with everyone listening to us? I literally only started seeing big posts on issues going on here after Ferguson, and that’s literally because we banded together and said enough is enough and made sure people heard what we were saying because the news for sure wasn’t gonna help us. I’ve seen y’all do it with Charlie Hebdo and Boko Haram and Ireland getting referendums on marriage equality and the UK holding protests that were being ignored when the Tories were voted in or the dozens of issues I’ve seen about Mexico and the recent news on the DR deporting people to Haiti just for looking Haitian or Germanwings. Yall can make some noise, so don’t say you can’t or that we ignore you, because we don’t.
We care, we really do, but when yall don’t scream at us that you want coverage or support or show us, we cannot help you and we can’t give you notes. Shove it at us from every angle, make your own tight-knit communities to help formulate posts and issues and news and to push it out, message big blogs and make sure you’re heard and make sure people see what you need to say. We can’t care if we don’t see it, and if yall don’t post it or don’t reblog a post twenty times to get it through to everyone in different timezones or when they’re randomly on Tumblr, we won’t know about it. This is exactly what happened in after Mike brown was killed, in a sense. His parents and his community made some noise and made sure people were woke, and you see what it started?
I follow quite a few non-American blogs, and hardly ever do I see things about their issues within their countries that didn’t explode all over Tumblr.
But like, bottom line and where the argument started: If you refuse to blog about social justice/progress in America just because we have the most coverage, your morals are a little warped.
yall want us to blog about eruopean massacres and issues? 100% okay!! i want to learn more and support those in other countries, honestly! but idk what to look for or where to find anything yall are posting about any of them so i can reblog and educate myself and my followers. im not european, i don't get much of your news here in ohio. the reason so many people blog about u.s problems is BECAUSE this site has so many americans and this is a PLATFORM for us. (american) black tumblr is huge but before ferguson, it wasn't really a community and not many social justice issues popped up for us to reblog- they were all left untouched because those of us who are now concerned and woke were just watching the news or didnt have the power behind us to get a movement started. black tumblr and twitter stepped up when ferguson happened and now everyone involved is actively searching for this shit and we know what to look for and we HAVE to report it and write posts and a community has risen from all of this, one that has reach and inspiration for those inside and we can support one another to get this shit out. idk if yall are doing this as eruopeans. here in america we got a spark to start a movement right? now we're making posts and reblogging about everything we see, and everyone else is seeing it too. i can't care about international issues if i have no idea they're happening. things are happening outside of my home country, and if i don't get the news, how am i supposed to know about it? you want tumblr to be less u.s centric? yall have to step up. we're not pushing you down or trying to give ourselves a spotlight [also, remember, this is where our unnoticed issues thrive because media ignores everything and is still racist as all hell]. there's plenty of room for your issues to be on this platform and to be spread around. more of you does not mean less of us. you want your news to get out here on tumblr? make it so! reblog like crazy, message big names, especially in black tumblr/twitter where they're super fucking likely to actually care. we wanna help you, trust me, but we don't know when yall are in trouble.
we´re here, we´re queer
