I am currently studying the continued use of motifs and tropes in fantasy and children’s literature that have their roots in antisemitic libel. This is a photo of me speaking about this topic at a graduate conference this past summer (I hope it’s okay over a selfie).

okay I love all these, do not apologize from rambling. but jeeze that second guy sounds like a FUN PERSON TO KNOW ��yuck. poor first guy though, sounds super socially awkward. and what an awful date!!

Yeah, where ever the first guy is, I wish him well, but we just didn’t click. /shrugs The second guy tho!!! I talked to him a total of 3 more times, twice of which were just..  inane chatter because I wanted nothing to do with him and I was stuck waiting for the transit one day and he wouldn’t leave. The third time though. It was Valentines day.  Weird dude spies me getting ready to break from my group of friends and starts to approach. “Oh. Oh no,” I mutter, loud enough for my friend L to hear me. She doesn’t even have time to ask what the matter is before this guy is kneeling in the dirt at my feet and presenting me with a glass rose. He gives this drawn out spiel about wanting to go out with me, honestly I stopped listening because all I could think was everyone is looking at this, kill me please and he ends with shoving the rose into my hands and then moving closer like he’s going to touch me. 

L immediately steps between us, lacing her fingers into my free hand.  “This is sweet and all, but she’s not available. She’s dating me, and I’m not cool with you following her around. Got it?” And I’m pretty sure I looked absolutely lovestruck following after her as she towed me away, so the guy either a. believed it and gave up, or just flat out gave up. Either way: I was happy because he never talked to me again.

RELATABLE. Gosh i look at my old ao3 and remember the shit i was working on. Where did that drive to write go??

From like... the end of 2011 to the middle of 2015 I wrote everything from original writing, to fic, to roleplaying and I just - yeah. Where on earth did that drive go??  Do we need to go on a quest to get it back??? WHAT WOULD WE EVEN PACK FOR THAT KIND OF QUEST??

Petal! Honeymoon! Mermaid!

petal; favorite novel and author?HMMM.  “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland” by Catherynne M. Valente is probably my favorite novel. It calls to the surface that bone deep yearning I’ve always had to adventure, to seek out magic. I cry every time I read it, and every time I read any of the other books in the series. As to favorite author though, I would have to say Charles de Lint. All of his books make me feel like it is perfectly feasible for faeries and spirits and other beings to be walking among us, for small bits of magic to change you irrevocably. You know the other day when you were talking about how being touched by magic that way would draw others to you? His characters are like that. Gosh. 

honeymoon; do you keep a journal?The closest thing I have to a journal is my script folder, where I write down and stick any and all of my story-like dreams and there are... a lot. Sometimes I kind of want to take them to psychologists who do dream studies. The last time I kept an ACTUAL journal though was when I was pregnant with Blayre, and it was filled with mostly anxiety ramblings. 

mermaid; do you prefer the forest or the ocean? why?The between! I’m lucky to live in an area where a great portion of the beaches we go to are bordered by forests. HIKING, I LOVE IT.

(now focusing on a specific culture's lore instead, but yes, GOOD NESS). Also I completely relate about when you feel most confident. need. things. in. order.

!! You know, I knew you were interested in fairy tales, folklore and myth too, like. We’ve had conversations about Red Riding Hood and Cinderella before. I’VE SEEN YOUR STACKS OF FOLKLORE BOOKS ON INSTAGRAM. But I am amazed that we don’t talk about this stuff more frequently! YES THO. FAIRY TALES IN SCHOOL. So when I was working at Borders one of my fellow managers was taking a class that heavily featured fairy tales and I had to like, rein myself in when she talked about it, because I so very wanted to do her homework. For fun.  I also have to bite my tongue when people tell me about fairy tale things because “Do you know about-” “YES. YES I DO, TALK TO ME ABOUT IT!” just. Scares people that mention it to me casually, lol.

Flannel and maize! And also 💖 Harry Potter, cause why not?

flannel - have you ever gone on a bad date? ...It took me like 5 minutes to remember his name. Stephen. He was a firefighter, and we had. Zero in common, but our first date was ok! He was polite, we watched a movie - I left. He got called on a wildfire not long after that, so it was a month or so before we had time to actually go on a date again, and convo was sparse in between that. He had no idea what to do for our next date, so I decided we could pack a lunch and go for a walk through the woods. That apparently meant show up in mountain hiking gear. So I’m dressed in a knee length skirt and flat shoes and he drives us out to the place and he has on a camo jacket and this floppy sunhat and sunglasses and this hiking stick that folds up - so already both of us are feeling awkward and - he just, couldn’t seem to talk? I don’t know if he was embarrassed or what, but conversing with him was like trying to pull teeth and eventually I just gave up. Neither of us had a very good time and the hug I gave him at the end of our date was.. sweaty because it was 90+ degrees outside and he had all that gear on. He still seemed interested in talking to me afterwards, but I think he wanted me to.. Talk at him? Like he was looking for a lady to coexist with, but not pursue? The whole thing was weird, and he msged me about 2 years after I got married and asked if I’d want to go out again, lol. 

maize - share the weirdest encounter you’ve had with a stranger on the street.I’m going to take ‘on the street’ as out in a public setting. Walking to one of my college classes one day I noticed that the guy walking like 10 yards ahead of me kept stopping or slowing down to turn and look at me. I was wary - I’m going to class, I just got off of work, leave me alone - and then he calls me by a name which is not mine. “Not me! I’m not so-and-so,” I tell him, fully intending on leaving it there and walking by. But then the guy has to introduce himself and tell me I look exactly like his ex-girlfriend. “Don’t worry,” he tells me, “she’s pretty,” like that.. is supposed to do something? I made my goodbye as fast as possible, but he chattered at me for another 3 minutes before he had to go a different way for class. (sadly this was not the only interaction I had with him)

Annnd fav character in Harry Potter:That one is tough, lol, plenty of charas come to mind without a clear favorite, so I’m going to be weird and answer in that I really like to read aloud as McGonagall. I’m reading HP to the kids for bedtime, and reading in my, probably very bad, Scottish accent for McGonagall is a lot of fun.

i mean, it is okay to give advice from that point too especially if it is a bad/detrimental relationship.

Agreed, I just. Am walking this narrow line because of how other fam members treat her. And she knows that she can talk to me always about anything, but I know I’m also/have always been a mom figure because of how much older I am than she is, and our mom being gone - and she’s skittish about disappointing me. Ahh, man.
