New aircraft is on lease for 15 years, clarifies PM's Department

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16, 2015:

The Prime Minister’s Department clarified today that it obtained the executive Airbus corporate jetliner aircraft (ACJ320) via a leasing contract for 15 years to replace the outgoing Boeing business jet (BBJ).

The use of the BBJ aircraft will be terminated to cover the purchase of the ACJ320, the department said in a statement today.

It further clarified that the BBJ aircraft was used by MAS since 1999 before the government acquired it for official use by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2003.

The BBJ aircraft is now 16 years old.

“The discussions to replace the BBJ were made two years ago, considering the fact that the cost to maintain it was increasing due to its age and safety factors,” the statement said.

It added that acquiring the ACJ320 aircraft in the government’s fleet would reduce operational, management and maintenance costs, considering that the government also has the ACJ319 in its fleet.

Apart from the ACJ319 and ACJ320 aircraft, the government’s fleet includes smaller planes, namely the Falcon, which was acquired in 1989, and the 2001 Global Express.

Earlier today, PKR member of Parliament Rafizi Ramli alleged that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had acquired a new private jet which had been painted with the 1Malaysia logo, asking the Prime Minister to cancel the purchase of the aircraft as Rafizi claimed it was extravagant.
