Empire

Pairing: Cassius x MC

Summary: After seventeen years away, Cassius hears news of his former home. Fortunately for him, his wife isn’t the only one who has the power to bring him back to reality. 

Note: Bless Cassius’s heart. He’s often a a bit too pensive for his own good, but I can’t help having a soft spot for him. I recently finished my first playthrough with him as my LI and found myself wondering how he might adjust to life away from Rome. This very short piece is the product of those musings, and it’s a little bit experimental. (If it’s awful, I’m blaming it on the fact that I never write fiction in present tense.)

Augustus.

The title heralds the end of the Republic and Rome as it had been: the demise of everything his father had loved and fought for. What it will be the beginning of, none can tell. 

Mind discordant, Cassius finds a seat on the raveled roots of the nearest stone pine. Above, strong branches split the sky, making only pale cracks visible through the thick green foliage. Back on earth, his long-forgotten memories mingle with questions for the future. 

He hears so little now of Rome. After seventeen years away -- seventeen years of building a life with the woman he loves -- it is not his custom to dwell on former days. Only when news comes, like today, does it become all-too easy to remember.

Rome had been his duty, his first love. He carries her teachings with him, even now in this tiny village that bears little resemblance to his motherland. Hadn't he owed it to her to keep others from poisoning her substance in the wake of war? But he had abandoned the city when she needed him most, left other men to harvest the seeds he had helped to sow.

With the memories comes a profound sense of guilt. 

If only...

A quiet giggle pulls his gaze away from the heavens with a start. Their youngest stands before him, so close that he might suspect interference of the gods had he not watched her sneak through the forest after her mother on countless occasions. She spins in a half-circle and plants herself on the bed of needles, lifting one hand over her shoulder.

Cassius takes the small wooden comb from her grip, runs his finger over the wide-set teeth. Before him, the girl swings the tangle of wavy dark hair over one shoulder, so long that the ends skim the base of her spine.

Sometimes he thinks that she knots the strands on purpose, for she knows that he is the one best equipped to bring them back into order. Though her mother has countless redeeming qualities, her patience for such matters is sorely lacking. Her brothers would be of even less use, for their lives have been molded more by toil than quiet musings. 

Starting close to the bottom, he holds the tresses in one hand and the comb with the other. Her humming carries back to him, tickling his ears as she strains for the highest note of the chorus she’s chosen. 

She is always making music, whistling her mother's lullabies or setting tunes to the poems that he has quoted to her from memory since birth. As he works his way closer her shoulders, she switches to imitating the call of the bird nesting in the branches above them.

Cassius finishes his task shortly after, and light bounces off the waves before him, more beautiful than any silk he's ever seen. Before they leave the stillness to rejoin the rest of the family, he presses a tender kiss to her crown, knowing without doubt that this is somehow even more important than all he left behind.

Ok absolutely LOVE ACOR!!! Played through 3 times with different LI, and love the way it gives you different scenerios depending on your choices. I definately feel it is one of the better books. Plus I really can not help but love Marc Anthony!

A Courtesan of Rome is one of my all time favorite books 😍 It tells a story about revenge, justice, romance, seduction, war, and using your wiles to seduce information out of your enemies💋 but while you master the art of seduction, will you fall for these people you’re seducing too? 👀😍😯 (on a side note, I don’t recall there being an art for Sabina 😭? Let me know if there is one, please!)
