In the Running, Chapter 39: Second Thoughts

(Seriously, that's how time works, apparently.) It's a short chapter, but there are longer ones coming. Explanations and whatnot are in the after notes.

It is undeniably liberating that it is now grammatically permissible to end a sentence with a “preposition” — strict observance of the prohibition on “terminal prepositions” can lead to awkward literary gymnastics, after all. That being said, however, there is a corner of my brain that cannot help but dwell on the fact that the label “preposition” predates the now discarded rule and literally means “place before.” Like, the rule was the name of these words. I find this to be strangely amusing.

W.I.P. Wednesday: Whoever Takes Me Home

Another selection from the story that is soaking up most of the oxygen in my brain space ... a rayllum compliant (of course), canon divergent, world building AU of The Dragon Prince:

“You seem to have a lot of trouble with the law,” translated Gren, his voice calm and firm … “Why don’t you tell us what happened? And please look up; General Amaya would like to be able to see your face while you speak.”

Watching his general conduct her interview, Corvus recalled how they had found the elf — she had been in pretty sad shape, and even with the benefit of a bath and four days of proper meals she did not yet appear to be healthy. And now she just looked … defeated.

US Voters:

Bill H.R. 9495 would grant the president— including but not limited to Donald Trump—sweeping, unrestricted power to direct the Treasury secretary to strip away the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations which they deem as "terrorist-supporting organizations." And there would fundamentally be no due process—nonprofits could lose their status without comprehensive evidence or explanation.

Will you take a minute to call your Representative to urge them to vote NO on H.R. 9495 right now?

Unsurprisingly, it's already illegal to provide support to terrorist organizations. So what's really behind this legislation? Simply, it's an authoritarian play led by Republicans to expand the powers of the executive branch so the next administration can crush nonprofits for their political opposition and stifle dissent. (However, future presidents could also use it against their opponents, even against conservative organizations. Nobody should want this bill.)

When you call, you can say something like this: "Hi, my name is ____ and I’m calling to urge Rep. ______ to vote 'no' on H.R. 9495 this week. I oppose the legislation because it's undemocratic to allow the Treasury secretary to strip nonprofit organizations of their tax-exempt status without due process. This bill aims to stifle dissent and free speech, key tenants of our democracy and freedoms. Thank you."

In the Running, Chapter 38: Decaf and Disclosure

“I think I know our culprit, and boy is Ez going to be in trouble if Mom finds out.”

“Your brother? Seriously?” asked Rayla, surprised at Callum’s accusation.

“It actually makes the most sense. I mean, aside from the question of how he got the video in the first place, who else could it be? There can’t be too many people who even could have access to that video, and they're probably adults. My guess is that for some reason known only to himself, Ezran decided to post the video, and only later took into consideration that Mom specifically told us that she did not want the conversation about a ‘bet’ leaving the table. It’s difficult to imagine an adult posting it in the first place, and I don’t think that they would have posted it and then changed their mind about audio; I think an adult would have just included it or not included it.”
