An Actor's Manifesto

Enter the fictional world relaxed and without insecurity, like a fish in water, seeking closer contact with the events of the imaginary at the height of universal truth, fully surrendering your responses to be intimately received. Act before you think, finding nothing unreasonable and little confusing, stillness and silence your sacred foundations.

Be a tuned in, vulnerable egomaniac with massive empathy. Free yourself from concern about how clever or put together you look, aware that dissociation and anticipation will always be corrupting you to appear that way. Entertain without apology, celebrating the primitive and the sublime both, doing interesting things and letting interesting things be done to you. Aspire to be known, especially those parts of yourself you think most shameful. Care and don’t care.

All the while you are applying your maximum level of concentration to what’s taking place within the imaginative sphere, permit another aspect of your nature to be conscious of your audience as an open-hearted, fellow traveler being lead by you into the beautiful and terrible, unknown world of the play. Accept the responsibility of being this sacrificial tour guide knowing that, not only will the audience perceive the journey differently than you, but, by the same token, aspects of your experience should properly be kept private from them.

Live with the same ferocity you did when you were a very young child and carve deeply into make-believe with specificity. Strive always for more ease and simplicity in everything you do. Execute your plan and follow inspiration, but do not believe anything you express deliberately while acting has merit: conscious expressions of your personality, your ideas or moods, are contaminants, obstructions to the flow of the truth. Shut up and get out of the way.

Before performing, daydream vivid experiences that your character has had with the other characters (and objects) so they automatically dictate your behavior in their presence, and visualize images of your Objectives being gained or lost so they will live in you and be stimulated by your successes and failures. Provide that your Objective might simply be to have your experience appreciated by someone (often a situation’s outrageousness), and allow that you can respond and deliver lines while profoundly stunned.

Determine the ways your character is different from yourself (if any) and seek to habituate the way they speak, move and the functioning of their faculties, as well as the methods they use to get what they want. Adjust your responses to things appropriate for your character (where necessary), making them either greater or less strange and significant than they would be for you, and then connect to the created Objectives at their greatest degree of consequence to your character’s needs and Life Drive. Be conscious where you should be conscious (in your homework before acting and on the moments while acting) and unconscious where you should be unconscious (abandon knowingness).

Know what you’re saying and express its core truth, speaking to hearts, not to heads. Every line of dialog you utter must serve your excellent Action, and you must not permit the seduction of the values seemingly inherent in the words to alter the thrust of what you are doing. Always be closing. At the same time, your Actions in the playing have to be constantly infused, and even challenged, by the unanticipated happenings of the moments, including the associations generated by any historical material introduced by others or your own recounting.

When preparing for a role, study and apply yourself to the aspects of the character’s life in all its important details in order to honor the fullness of their humanity; and, no matter how wretched they appear to others, you must believe every character you portray is someone you have to live up to. Dare that your audience will confuse you with your character… indeed, wish it!

Consider yourself a student of the human condition in general (rich/poor, brutal/lovely, big gestures/tiny gestures) and more specifically how it expresses itself in you. Be acquainted with the great works of art and those who created them. Learn from, and copy freely, the techniques of the masters and the novice next to you, alike. Everything, particularly what you cannot pin down with a name, nourishes you.

Because your job is the expression of peak human vitality, it will be necessary for you to keep your instrument in excellent health. Because you will need your psyche as pure as possible to concentrate to make available your gifts, you must keep your spirit uncluttered by personal turmoil. To this end, seek to maintain a gentle superiority over life, keeping a firm control over yourself, doing what’s yours to do, and accepting the rest with serenity. LET LIFE HAPPEN.

You are part of a tradition that goes back to the earliest beginnings of civilization and has consistently provided a moral compass leading to improvement in the quality of life on earth. It is your responsibility to honor those who have come before you, just as you are entitled to expect the best of those who follow. •••••

It's Work... But You Might Be Amazed

There are many factors that can severely inhibit the expression of a person’s natural charisma. For instance, a childhood environment that was insular or had rigid conventions with regards permissible traits (i.e. boys shouldn’t get upset, girls shouldn’t get angry), or for a particular family it might have been that the mother or the firstborn boy were the designated stars and no upstaging of them was appreciated. Maybe a physical abnormality of some kind became stigmatized and a need to retreat was felt, or a trauma struck the entire family and everyone got diced, iced and shoehorned into a box to compensate. Yet still, what appears at present to be a cut off and uninspired outward personality, may in fact be someone with an explosive talent for dynamism just waiting for the supportive “oos” and “ahs” of a rapt audience to ignite it and restore it to its true glory.

This is why we need to be told stories. We need to be put back into balance. By being presented with ethical dilemmas and feeling within them the struggle to select the right path, we learn, or reaffirm, the true way to conduct ourselves in the world, regardless of the distortions of the truth we’ve been made to deal with and been confused by. The arts have historically been associated with progressive cultural movement because they make plain and celebrate an audience’s shared values, resonating those values in a sanctified fashion in community. They keep moving us away from the Us vs. Them mentality and toward a greater truth we all recognize because it strikes that ideal average we know because we feel its beauty.

It will require more than just the wanting of transformation to evolve and get more charming. It will take a lot of uncomfortable experience to break down and get free of those old programs. It will take the same kind of willful effort to push through as someone undergoing physical rehabilitation after a part of their body has been restricted and unused. Like that, it requires a forced flushing of blood and nutrients through previously closed off areas of the system. There are some very real psychic forces a person might be up against in changing their conditioning. It might feel like a violation of the code of your family, or even your entire culture, and the fear of change, and the unknown world you would then be stepping into, all will be working against your opening yourself to a new way of being. James Baldwin said: “Nothing is more desirable than to be released from and affliction, but nothing is more frightening than to be divested of a crutch.”

The good news is, you may not be as far off as you think. It may be your personality is not so mutated out of line with the average personality, but rather all this time it’s been desperately compensating to look like it is, and what you think of as your less than charismatic self is really a weight you’ve gotten used to carrying that you can actually do without. Maybe you aren’t the way you think you have to be, and those are just ingrained habits you can let go of, adaptations you no longer need. Maybe you’re reacting to obstacles no longer in your path, and with relatively little work, your natural inclination, which is much more consistent with the charismatic average, can reassert itself. And free again as you came into this world, charismatic, with a natural connection to all that it is to be human, you can shine. Not by working to be a stand-out. Not different, but the most like everyone and true to your deepest self, both. You are the X Factor.
