Zoe climbed off the floor and walked into the girl's bathroom stall with a last look over her shoulder at her rescuer.  Dean was a tall man and seemed assured in himself even with the fact that they had both just climbed out of their graves.  She had not said anything about the way she had been buried, and Dean was dehydrated enough to not bring it up.  The edges of her memory were fuzzy.  She remembered fighting with Carter, but nothing after tripping.  She had the vague sense that she had done something that she would have told one of her patients not to have done, but that was neither here nor there.

Her most pressing matter was the date. How much time she had lost since her and Carter’s fight.  Dean had handed her a water bottle and she had glanced the date on a newspaper shortly thereafter.  September 2008.  She had lost nearly ten years.

She stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom and looked herself over.  She was pale, dirty, but no worse for wear than she remembered.  She lifted her shirt and had to stifle a yelp of terror.  There was a hole in her chest.  It was old and not bleeding, but had not healed in any way.  She pulled the knife from her pocket.  She had been buried with.  The depth of the wound matched the knife from the best she could guess.

Shock and fear raged in her mind.  Dean had been starving and dehydrated when they arrived at the quick mart, but the idea of ingesting anything turned Zoe’s stomach.  She had drunk the water with the hopes of clearing the dirt out of her throat and it had worked, until she had retched it back onto the floor.  She felt cold, and couldn’t feel her heartbeat.

She held her breath.  And felt the seconds turn to minutes.  There was no burning in her lungs from the lack of oxygen. In fact, she felt the same as before.  She stopped holding it, and breathed normally, not fatigued.  The brought the knife to her hand, sliding it across her palm.  The skin split like butter, but no blood flowed.  Zoe sobbed.  She knew the truth.

She was dead.

“Oh, more tears?”  Zoe heard her reflection say in the mirror.  She snapped her head up to see a darker version of herself looking back.  “I thought you were past this whole, ‘I died’ crap.  Oh, stop gaping.  I’m your shadow, and we have a deal.  Don’t go getting all amnesia on me.  Keep it the fuck together.”

“I don’t know-”  there was a pounding on the door to the bathroom.

“Hey, Zoe, something’s not right.  We need to get out of here.”  Dean called from the other side of the door.  “Also there isn’t any salt in there is there?”

“No salt!”  Zoe’s shadow snapped at her upon hearing Dean’s words.

“Nothing here.”  She said without looking around.  It took her another minute to clean off her face.  She knew she was going to need to invest in makeup to keep up this alive façade.

A strange ringing in her ears distracted her, and she left the bathroom to investigate.

“What the hell is that?”  she asked clutching the knife at the ready as Dean lined the doorways and windows with salt.
