I find it so very annoying when someone working to motivate a group uses the term let's (i.e. let us). I've seen this from a company "objective" when they said "let's say thanks", and even this morning from a LinkedIn Leadership newsletter discussion article entitled Let's be Mindful.

What bothers me about this use of let's is the innate passivity of it. They are literally saying "let us...[whatever]", which inherently indicates that someone or something is preventing them from [whatever]ing, instead of proactively directing their listeners/readers to [whatever]. The let's speaker makes themselves the victim of preventative oppression by begging for release from that oppression.

The natural response to when someone says "let's [whatever]" is to ask "who/what is stopping you?" This naturally follows with the revelation that they are only stopped by themselves, which (if followed along its active path) finally leads to saying "do/be [whatever]", which is what they should have actively said at the beginning instead of "let's."

At the start, the company "objective" should have said "Say thanks" and the LinkedIn article should have been entitled Be Mindful.

Stop being so passive and using let's.
