Writing Practice: Passiveness

(Exercise in removing passive verbs like "is." Wrote first draft to set the scene, then second draft removing passive language and inserting visuals to give more life to the narrative.)

First Draft:     Her room, eclectic, bright, sometimes distractingly noisy, was so very much her own. It did not define her, though. She was not her room; she was deeper than that. The walls of her room were black outlines that she colored around, though not necessarily inside of. Because sometimes clouds needed to be blue, and sometimes flowers could not help but bleed into the grass, their colors so vibrant they could not be contained. The color of flowers had an effect on her soul. I would see it start in her hands—a slight quivering. It would spread like the shocks of an earthquake until her entire body rocked, and I waited to see if she would fall apart at the seams. Second Draft:     She’d covered every bare inch of her walls and ceiling in colors—posters and paintings and postcards, because art that starts with P feels more personal, she once said, popping her P’s deliberately. Weary eyes found no peace among the eclectic promotional ads for movies and children’s paint-by-numbers. The tired, brown carpet offered the only escape from neon colors and eclectic print text. The walls suffered her boundless energy and absorbed it, becoming a strange self-portrait. They did not define her, though. They stood as mere outlines for her to color around, though not necessarily inside of. Because sometimes clouds needed to be blue, and sometimes flowers could not help but bleed into the grass. Those rare times, their vibrant colors raged and spilled over the looping lines that tried to contain them, flooding the green grass with oranges and reds and “Tickle-Me-Pink.” The rushing color continued up into her hands as she worked, making them shake. Making them quake. Seismic waves—P-waves and S-waves—rocked through her body until she risked falling apart at the seams of her stark white hospital gown. She never did—fall apart, that is. The walls stayed standing as the quake passed, and each time she sighed out the pain in her lungs before smiling.
