Short & Sweet Tracks
with caravan in tow
Living in a tourist destination certainly has its perks, and as a family we love exploring and discovering all that Denmark has to offer! It was the driving reason for our move here in the first place. But even though our life feels at times like a holiday, we still like to getaway. And the beauty of Great Southern region is that you don’t have to go far to find new thrills.
Because reality is – we do work and have to factor in those mundane family obligations we all deal with. But escaping that routine, even for a night or two, can be really refreshing and does not have to cost a whole lot. So we have been focusing on frequent "Short & Sweet" options nearby Denmark to make the most of our weekends. Hitch the caravan up and in less than 100km's we can be at a new place with a heap to see and do.
Making a weekend trip to a local destination definitely has its advantages:
Maximise your available weekend time to explore/reset rather than travel
Affordable fuel option (especially when towing)
Feels like you are getting away for not much effort
Discover new things just down the road
You are not far from home if something comes up
If you travel in low-season you contribute to local town economy and your costs are relative
Even if you can't check-in at the caravan park or accommodation until a certain time, there is always a place to park a long vehicle in a small regional town, so you can start exploring as soon as you arrive! Most big tourist attractions allow for this but do your research. Other things to consider to keep it short and sweet:
Decide on a weekend that suits entire family (ie make sure the missus is on board)
Look at the weather forecast and choose your activities before you head off (helps with what to pack)
A couple of days in advance - turn on the fridge, fill up water tanks, check gas bottles
Pack caravan the night before
Prep some food/snacks to take with you – saves money and time on shopping/cooking/cleaning
If everything is done the night before then you can hitch up in the morning and make the most of your first day
We love going on big and small adventures, not every trip needs to be an extreme journey. Our last “Short & Sweet” stay was at Coalmine Beach Holiday Park in Walpole (45 min drive from Denmark) and it was a quality getaway with the family. The Park was one of the best we’ve been to for natural surrounds and camping amenities - like our own personal fire pit. The list of activities in the area is endless – from Long Point 4wd Track which takes you to scenic beaches, a visit to Fernhook Falls or Giant Tingle Tree Walk and of course the iconic Valley of the Giants.
But our favourite moments were sitting around the fire, cooking up an easy meal and watching our little man fall asleep in his camping chair.
Let us know if you have a trusty local spot you go to for a re-charge!
Cheers,
John

How Does a Water Sports Summer Camp Support Physical Fitness?
A Water Sports Summer Camp helps improve overall fitness by engaging campers in full-body physical activities. At Winning Techniques Camp, sports like kayaking and swimming build muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility. Water resistance provides a safe way to exercise without putting stress on joints. These activities are ideal for children who enjoy being active but may not be interested in traditional land sports. Regular participation in water sports helps build healthy habits that last long after the camp season ends.
