I haven't even watched conclave yet and sometimes I come across some strange video that fandomizes the irl cardinals with tiktok fancam edits or unhinged tv show recaps and the first thought that comes to mind is literally "I wonder if this is what also happened in the universe of conclave 2024" before I remind myself that our universe is the basis for conclave 2024 and yes, of course this is what happened there because it's happening here right now
The conclave doesn't even start until like the 7th and I can't stop thinking about how one of the papabili (cardinals that's likely to become pope) is named Pierbattista Pizzaballa like imagine if he became pope, it'd be so sad that he won't be known as Pope Pizza because he's definitely going to change his name because it's just been a long time tradition

My friend has sent our group chat a screenshot that shows that people are at least joking about how a photo of Tagle and the Pope "looks like queerbaiting" and I had seen a separate instance of a tumblr user saying that there's a ship name for it. I'm not sure how widespread this is but it's probably on the more joke-y fringe side on twitter and is most likely using other censorship methods (like writing pope as p0pe or conclave as cnclv) so it's hard to really gauge how popular this is and especially since I had elected not to use twitter. It probably isn't that popular beyond jokes and specifically most likely jokes from fans of the Conclave movie but yeah it exists.
I had checked AO3 while typing this out and yes, there's currently 4 ship fics about them with 3 unique authors so again pretty few. Though I will admit, that the fics regarding the ship seems to be very sincere.

Considering that apparently a lot of cardinals watched the movie in order to get the gist of the actual conclave before they go themselves, I wonder what their opinions are on the ending?
I know the conclave already started and this is a settled issue already but it must be soooo embarrassing to come over the Vatican as a disgraced cardinal to try to petition for reinstating your right to vote after it was stripped away when you were convicted of fraud and embezzlement, only for one of the dead pope's closest friends and one of the leading papabili whip out a surprise document that the pope made that no one else knew about until the very meeting before the conclave that was made specifically to tell people to not let you vote like that's so embarrassing
To have the pope announced just to have the live chat spam "W" is really funny and a great encapsulation of this decade
There's an interview with American Cardinal Dolan where he said that most people, although having a positive view on Prevost/Leo prior to meeting him as someone who works at the Vatican, weren't that well-acquainted with him and he felt like he did come from nowhere where even the American cardinals didn't knew he was American. He also believed that there were some cardinals that didn't knew he was American either.
One thing he says is that one of the things that could've been his advantage is that he wasn't popular (probably to outsiders of the college) and therefore most people didn't really see him as a cardinal that was attached to what he says are "trends" which is interesting. He also pointed out that what he found interesting is that a headline in an Italian newspaper described Leo as a "calm pope" or a "peaceful pope" which made him believe that perhaps him being calm was what also moved the other cardinal electors to vote for him, though he has kept his secret on whether or not he did which makes sense.
