ik you probably expected it, but this fucker is not good at comforting. he's generally not good at emotions if i'm being honest. he mostly just... ignores them. and he will advise you to do that as well. he will try to make it seem like your problem is the smallest there could be and immediately rationalize how it's really not even a problem, and belittling issues is definitely not a good way to deal with them

it can result in some fights, honestly, but he genuinely doesn't see what he did wrong. like, what the fuck do you want? to mop over some stupid inconvenience or your own mental health? bitch, just get over yourself and distract yourself - that's basically his way of thinking. you'd be surprised at how many repressed issues he has because he's taken such an approach in life

you'll have to quite literally spell it out to him that ignoring your problems doesn't make them disappear and even then he won't really believe what you're saying. honestly, if you need comfort, just grab him and force him to cuddle. he would never deny you that. and unless it's a practical problem like school/work or somethin' like that, he won't really be able to give you good advice. he won't even truly get what you're feeling because he's repressed his feelings for so long. but just tell him that his presence calms you and it'll feed his ego just enough to cuddle you close, kiss your forhead and run his hands through your hair or on your back. he likes feeling needed and useful. he also wants you to be happy but let's focus on his ego

now, when it comes to being comforted, it's a bit different. as i said, this motherfucker repressed his feelings for so long he doesn't even remember how some emotions feel. he will throw himself into a work frenzy, distract his mind from whatever it is that's bothering him (as long as it's a personal matter, because he deals with most practical problems on the spot) for so long that he forgets he was even sad/angry in the first place

but if you genuinely showed support, inquired more and made him think about those problems, proved to him that you cared, that you wanted him to be happy, that you wanted to help him out with all those feelings boiling deep down inside him, his approach may actually change. of course, initially it will absolutely result in a meltdown. you've forced him to feel things again and he doesn't know how to deal with that. but when you continuously show support and prove to him that you're not going to abandon him just because he's just human and not perfect in every way, he might actually trust you. like, really trust you. he might even... acknowledge his own feelings, his past traumas, his weaknesses. he could honestly change. for the better at that! oh my god, what is that? edward being in touch with his emotions and learning to respect other people's feelings? what the fuck?
