Woah I didn’t know people from Louisiana actually spoke Cajun French??? That’s so cool?? Do tell more about it if u want !!

Oh yeah bro! I know a local here recently made an app (can’t remember the name of it) for people who want to learn Cajun French. I took French classes from 10-14, then again as a college freshman. But I’m not fluent, I have a basic understanding of french tho. Without going too much into Cajun history, way back in the day, people were harsh on those speaking Cajun French in school, p much everyone in Louisiana grows up learning about the struggles Cajun people faced, so eventually there was something passed to encourage people speaking french and take french classes. I can’t remember the specifics of it but that’s a summary. If you’re a Louisiana native, or your family is from here, chances are you grew up with your grandparents and great-grandparents etc speaking Cajun French. Not everyone is fluent, but there’s a lot of common phrases used. Like for example, I know ppl who call their aunt Tante. I say “sha” and “t-tiny” idk if those are specifically Cajun French terms but a lot of Cajun people say them. Like when something is really cute and small, like a kitten. Kittens are t-tiny. My mom is well known for saying a combination of French and Cajun French terms. She kind of has her own language meaning they don’t exactly translate in the way they would in French. I’m not even sure how to spell them all lol, like for example how she’d pronounce this would be (again, spelling is off but) “sha teet fi.” She says that when something is cute, like a baby. She also says “Mais en feh” which like again idk if even she knows what the en feh part means she just says that when somethings like... like if you go to a Coffee Shop and they’re out of coffee. She’d say “mais en feh.” Another thing is last names, and English words being mixed with Cajun words. Like there’s a snow cone stand in my town that spells “snow” as “Sneaux.” For football games people type “Geaux *insert team name*” Or some people spell local as “leauxcal.” Common last names would be Babineaux, Robicheaux, Hebert (pronounced Eh-bear), Broussard, Thibodeaux, Boudreaux, Trahan (pronounced Traw-hohn but without pronounced the “n”, like how you’d say “Non” in French). If you have anymore questions feel free to ask!
