WALK LIKE HEAVEN BUT WALK LIKE HEAT

LEYA, a duo comprised of Adam Markiewicz and Marilu Donovan make uneasily gorgeous music, turning traditionally classical instruments—violin and harp—into vehicles for alternatively-tuned experiment. Reviewing the new Flood Dream, Jennifer Kelly wrote, “The harp, tuned in eccentric ways, cuts through like a diamond knife, scattering staccato shards of brilliance. Donovan sings, mostly, aligning sometimes with the flickering, mildly conflictive drones of violin, sometimes cutting free and executing acrobatic flights and swoops above it all.” Mariewicz and Donovan share their pandemic inspired playlist below.

Flood Dream by LEYA
LEYA is a duo of Marilu Donovan and Adam Markiewicz, two conservatory trained musicians who play instruments foundational to classical music, harp and violin respectively. But though clearly grounded in contemporary classical music, LEYA is not confined by it. These eerily gorgeous compositions punctuate long humming drones with off-tuned flurries of harp. The sound is serene and slow moving, cool and a bit murky, as massed violin tones vibrate against one another and vocals drop in and out of legible speech. When Donovan’s soprano cascades through or when her harp picks sharp-angled architectures, it’s like sunshine piercing lake water, sudden, illuminative, revealing the motes and waves of ambient sound around it.
