reasons why tumblr really lost a big one when y'all ignored the fosters
brilliant representation throughout : not only are lgbtq+ characters front and centre of the whole show, it involves their complex storylines and character development while carefully balancing how much of their queerness affects the stories. (lesbian moms, one of them is biracial, latinx foster kids, trans characters played by actual trans people, etc the list is endless really)
all of this is only possible because the writers have lived experiences of the stories they're depicting and this is evident as you watch the show
they don't shy away from showing the flaws and biases that people within the community may have as well, there's no victimising or portraying the characters as morally perfect people who were hurt by the world, each character makes mistakes and develops their own identity throughout the course of the show.
while it is all dramatised (it's a tv show not a biography) the experiences are all realistic and for the most part represent an accurate time frame for events to take place.
i found that the male gaze depiction of lesbian relationships was not there and it presented a relationship of equals and partners and parents
the spinoff show, good trouble, presents a story that has the nuance that we're used to in tv these days because it was created in 2018 compared to the fosters which started airing in 2013. additionally, it also has absolutely brilliant representation of SO MANY DIVERSE PEOPLE. (no im serious about this google it it's simply *chefs kiss*)
