Shit. It probably was broken. Caleb looked at her, very nearly pouting, and finally relented. “...All right, fine,” he said, gingerly offering her his arm. It was already beginning to swell. “What do you think, then?”

Silent were the oars as they dipped in and out of the salt water of the Sound. Lights from houses dotted the shoreline of Setauket guiding the boatman homeward. Caleb skillfully landed the craft in a cove, and grabbed the precious cargo before setting off into the bushes. An October breeze whispered through the trees with the hint of cold weather to come.

The precious cargo was a box wrapped in canvas to prevent water from ruining the contents. Inside the box was a block of chocolate. Hot chocolate was becoming a popular drink for the well to do, and chocolate was hard to come by if you weren’t in a trading port. But, the smuggler knew of places of dubious legality to get hard to find items.

He could find his way to his childhood home with his eyes closed though it had been years since he had lived there. His room had been taken over by the soldiers that were billeted there. That had been in the last letter Charlotte had written. And, by God they had better be treating his family with respect or he was going to come back, with a couple of his associates.

A candle flickered in her room. Taking the chance of attracting the attention of the soldiers he picked up a pebble and threw is against the window frame.

However, Caleb hadn’t responded to her signal in days and the news Anna held in her hands was of immediate importance to His Excellency as it contained troop movements and a potential plot on the general’s life. She was left with no other option than to consult the only other person she trusted in Setauket.

In a conspiratorial tone, Anna utters, “Charlotte, you know how to sail from Caleb’s stories... right? Well, lets take the boat out and wait until darkness. We need to get this information across the Sound tonight.”

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable of privileges that came with rank and position was the ability to chose for himself where he traveled and when. Of course, as all things, it had to be within reason but as he was currently operating near Long Island, what was the harm in checking on friends and family? With all of the access points, it wasn’t terribly difficult to change out of uniform and then make his way to the Brewster homestead.

Walking confidently, nodding in a friendly manner to civilian and soldier alike, the major sauntered up the short open drive and knocked once on the door.

“Behind Bars”

So... Maybe Caleb had had too much to drink, and maybe he’d swung on some guy and started a big fight in the bar, but if he could remember he’d be pretty sure the guy had deserved it. It had definitely been worth the black eye he’d gotten. Probably, definitely.

What wasn’t deserved, though, was Caleb’s night in jail - And having to face his sister afterwards. He knew he’d never live this down.

“Hiii Charlie,” he said, smiling and hoping for her mercy. “Thank you for bailin’ me out and also for your discretion!”
