Finished first large for 2020 shell series today.
I really love the way it turned out, although I disagreed with myself several times about how to treat this imagined beach, and i imagined taking the painting in several different directions.
But i decided I didn't need to choose. It's my artwork. I took it in several different directions at once.
I love the expressive wave, and I tucked a smaller, realistic wave underneath it.
The cloud I began to blend and thought of making realistic, but then changed my mind because I wanted the shell to be the object of focus - it’s like when shell hunting and you see a great find, you don't see the clouds or the sky in the distance. They register like blurs and outlines in our peripherals. The waves, whether you are refusing to register them or not, demand attention with their sound and movement. The beach has been swept smooth and clean. The beach isn’t littered endlessly with perfect shells or even imperfect remnants of shells.
How fast will the wave sweep the rest back out?
Better grab that shell before the wave reclaims it for the sea!

(inspired by my own shell hunting where I found almost accidentally a whole whelk shell without a hole or blemish. It just happen to be out in the open and I had to step on it from it being washed out of my sight. I dug it out from under my foot. The surf was rough. The beach was blown and washed smooth. I felt very lucky.)
