we’ll peel the skin off fruit with our teeth

cherries, grapes, plums

one girl told me to eat my kiwis skin and all. i did it to entertain, to please, and to humor her.

but the rough skin didn’t go down quite right.

another girl ate her fruit boiled down and smashed between peanut butter and white bread.

the first girl (who wasn’t really the first at all) wore her strawberries on her shirt,

a sugar plum fairy

there are enough poems about women and fruit,

but there aren’t enough poems about you.

no woman at all,

you are lambs and lambs ear and muscle and tears

you are my butch dream, naps in the afternoon, soft stomachs and whipped cream

you see, the flesh is fragile, peel gently

press your teeth softly

i try to press softly

but sometimes i don’t know what i’m doing

black spruce needle, citrus and spice
