Back to Basics II - Types of ADHD
New post today, this one about types of ADHD and our strengths.
There are three types of ADHD: Inattentive Type (ADHD-I), Hyperactive/Impulsive Type (ADHD-HI), and Combined Type (ADHD-C). Is it really as simple as this, though? Well, sort of. Let’s talk about it. Pinnable image for this post, featuring a person running up a flight of stairs towards a light bulb. The first thing to remember is that ADHD is diagnosed based on observed behaviours. The second…

So I know you've mentioned ADHD-PI, but is there a type of ADHD that centers more around hyperactivity? 'Cause I don't do as much of the attention deficient stuff as I do hyperactivity/impulsiveness.
Yeah, there’s three types of ADHD:
ADHD-Primarily Inattentive ADHD-Combined ADHD-Primarily Hyperactive
PI is more common in AFAB people, though they can get any of the types. If you think you don’t fit the internal hyperactivity / daydreaming part, then you might be Primarily Hyperactive. If you do, but think that the hyperactivity is more of a pain / equally noticeable, then you probably have the combined type.
ADHD is more than just hyperactivity and inattentiveness. It's also impulsivity, hyperfocus/hyperfixation, anxiety, impatience, and social awkwardness. It varies for many people.
Some people have hyperactive-type ADHD.
Some people have inattentive-type ADHD.
Some people have combined-type ADHD.
It is not confined to one category, just as other neurdivergencies aren't confined to a specific label.
hey I was just wondering, I was finally diagnosed with adhd this year (around March I believe), also I'm 22, but the doctor labeled me as inattentive type. do other people with adhd go by their types? like ik people just say they have adhd, but I just wondered if people talk about the types their diagnosed with. I hope my question made sense uhh 😅
this makes sense! I believe it is all up to personal preference- I have combined type, but i usually just say “adhd” to simplify it, but when talking in depth sometimes i/ll specify which type it is- but obviously predominantly hyperactive or predominantly inattentive folks are gonna have less overlap in symptoms, so sometimes it helps to specify in conversation! But it’s whatever you wanna do!
The ADHD iceberg
Hi! I plan to try & get an adhd dx soon. 2 people in my immediate family have been diagnosed & my family pretty much agrees I have it too. I’m aware I very likely have inattentive adhd but I’m not sure if I also have hyperactive adhd? I’m a girl and I know it presents differently - do you have any info on that? I tend to talk a lot & fast and fidget lots, but I don’t have trouble sitting to, say, watch a movie (although I often switch positions.) Could that still be ADHD-H? Thank you so much!

So typically, there are a few things that are different for girls as we get older. There’s a theory that boys retain hyperactive symptoms involving running around and the like far longer than girls because it’s socialized out of us at an early age. If true, I may have retained some of mine because I have three younger brothers and played with them a lot.
Hyperactive/Impulsive symptoms:
Often fidgets with or taps hands or feet, or squirms in seat.
Often leaves seat in situations when remaining seated is expected.
Often runs about or climbs in situations where it is not appropriate (adolescents or adults may be limited to feeling restless).
Often unable to play or take part in leisure activities quietly.
Is often “on the go” acting as if “driven by a motor”.
Often talks excessively.
Often blurts out an answer before a question has been completed.
Often has trouble waiting their turn.
Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games)
For diagnosis, you need six of these, or five if you’re over the age of 17.
I thought I was Inattentive, but I was diagnosed with Combined at the age of 28. My Hyperactive/Impulsive symptoms?
Fidgeting, almost constantly. Part of my body is always in motion.
When I get started talking, I don’t stop.
I have a lot of trouble waiting for someone else to finish talking so I can say what I want to say. This results in interruptions.
I say things I shouldn’t when I shouldn’t to people I shouldn’t.
I talk to myself constantly, especially when doing something that really ought to be a quiet activity. When I’m in a group, this means I’m often blathering on at other people about whatever I’m doing. And, bless their hearts, they’re often too polite to tell me to STFU.
I make really impulsive decisions sometimes, which has led to money issues among other problems.
I hope this helps!
