The corner of Gabriel’s mouth twitched up and he nodded. “Yeah, you got me there. And, yeah, maybe I saved your asses after all the shit that I did, but I didn’t think it’d be that easy to forgive.” He shook his head, laughing softly.
“I really don’t get you, Sam. You’d think after everything that was laid out for you and everything that’s happened to you, you’d just be fucked up beyond human recognition, but you two are still fighting. You have literally been to Hell and you’re still trying to protect people and angels like Cas, and anybody else who’s down on their luck.” He paused and looked at his brother, sighing. But then his face softened and he looked up at Sam, “Thanks for taking care of him.”
Sam shrugged at that, “Dude, at least you didn’t start the Apocalypse. I was forgiven even for that. And Cas basically became God once and betrayed us, but we forgave him….and Dean’s not exactly an angel either. So, you might as well join the club.” He grinned a little at that. They were all a little broken here, but they made a good team and a good family. Though Sam doesn’t know just how long Gabriel would want to stick around, he thought with time, he could see the archangel becoming a good part of it too. If he wanted to.
There was a lot that wasn’t said tonight, and probably wouldn’t be for a long while now, but at least Sam had told Gabriel how he felt. It was up to him now what he wanted to do.
Sam’s expression sobered up and he gave the other a light nod. “He’s family and he’s been through a lot with us. Hell, he’s died for us more than once. We’d never abandon him. Why do you think we keep going? You have to have something to fight for right? Well, I fight for my brother and my friend and well..the world. I think that’s what keeps us going.”
“Didn’t start it, no, but I saw enough of it to know there was no stopping it. It wasn’t entirely your fault; you were destined to do it,” Gabriel said. He had some questions about Castiel being God, but that could wait for another time. But the fact that Sam was forgiving him and that they had all forgiven each other made him feel a little better. Maybe he did have a chance if he decided to stay here.
“Something to fight for, yeah,” he murmured, looking away. He didn’t know what he fought for anymore, but it had to be something or else he would have given up and let the monsters destroy him. But it hurt to know that his little brother had died multiple times while he was gone.
