Wait, what?! I'M APRIL?? Heck yes I am! One of the highlights of last year for me was meeting Substantia Jones and being photographed by her. Better yet, it was one of those rare instances when I met one of my heroes and they were as amazing in person as their image had been in my mind. Imagine my delight then when I found out that I was going to be in this year's calendar. Is it possible to be humbled and filled with pride at the same time? The Adipositivity Project has been such an important part of my journey in Fat Acceptance, in helping me find beauty and joy in all kinds of bodies, in teaching me how much the images we are allowed to see and not see shape our world view, and most importantly that all of us deserve to be seen and see our likeness reflected back at us in the world, that we ALL belong. To imagine that I might now be part of someone else's journey...well, how could I be anything but!? If you haven't been to visit adipositivity.com then shame on you for sure. I wish I could say I always feel as majestic as this photo makes me look, but I don't. And I think it'd be some straight up fuckshit for me to imply anything else. I'm still the same hot headed, scatter brained, sometimes ditzy, always awkward person. Just today I got into a verbal sparring match with someone I love and trust me, I was fully prepared to verbally castrate a bitch. Frankly, my verbal sparring matches are a HUGE part of why I meditate- because the heat of my temper could strip the grease off a cast iron skillet. That's one of the great ironies of the yoga world- asana makes us look so "majestic" and beautiful on the outside only to be messy as hell on the inside. But actually, that's probably the majesty. And that's probably the beauty, too. I don't see any sense in trying to cover up the messiness. Had a completely uplifting evening with Dr Cat Pausé and awesome visiting Photo-Activist #SubstantiaJones over a delicious meal with the effervescent Lissy Cole! We all had the incredibly empowering experience of being photographed by Substantia for the #adipositivityproject too! Substantia has a show at Palmerston North's #TeManawa opening at the end of the month and she's delivering a keynote at Fat Studies: Identity, Agency, Embodiment, a badass conference hosted by Massey University!
