This one is special. It's a gallery of eight images, each with words on it that read as a poem (if you follow the order! ). It didn't take courage to wear a bikini. The courage came much before this. It took courage to start on a journey of living unapologetically. It took courage sticking by that path in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform, to carve my body smaller so that it might fit narrow beauty ideals that masquerade as striving for "health" or so that I (and it) may be loved. This? Not so much. This is freedom. This is choice. This is joy. This is a person having fun on a beach in clothing that is meant for that specific purpose. That any of us might require courage to do this is unconscionable! Let's stop thinking that the idea of a "bikini body" or a "beach body" is normal. It's not. Wait, what?! I'M APRIL?? Heck yes I am! One of the highlights of last year for me was meeting Substantia Jones and being photographed by her. Better yet, it was one of those rare instances when I met one of my heroes and they were as amazing in person as their image had been in my mind. Imagine my delight then when I found out that I was going to be in this year's calendar. Is it possible to be humbled and filled with pride at the same time? The Adipositivity Project has been such an important part of my journey in Fat Acceptance, in helping me find beauty and joy in all kinds of bodies, in teaching me how much the images we are allowed to see and not see shape our world view, and most importantly that all of us deserve to be seen and see our likeness reflected back at us in the world, that we ALL belong. To imagine that I might now be part of someone else's journey...well, how could I be anything but!? If you haven't been to visit adipositivity.com then shame on you for sure. The first time I wore a mini dress after a long time. No jacket to cover up my arms, no leggings/pantyhose to distract attention from my legs... and I couldn't have felt better. Turns out making the decision to wear what makes you happy takes more courage than the actual act of wearing those clothes. Once you've won over yourself, you can stand up to most anything. Sad that we live in a world where such considerations have to be made, because winning over yourself doesn't mean that you've won the world over. And more often than not, you WILL have to stand up to something or the other. Courage my lovelies, for you didn't ask to battle, but battle you must- for freedom, for joy, for dignity. If there are days when getting out of bed is a mountain you can't climb, when you feel like there's an iron weight tied to the pit of your stomach pulling you down, when breathing seems a task because you're being smothered by a heavy dark cloud at the brink of a cloudburst-but somehow that release never comes, when you want to smack the next person who asks you why you're sad, or maybe you should try yoga or adopting a positive attitude- but you don't because you're nice that way (and it would be too much effort); when all this is true for you for hours or days on end KNOW that you're ok, you're worthy, you're human, you're deserving of compassion and self-care, you're derserving of undemanding hugs (if that's your jam as it's mine)...just KNOW IT. Also, consider seeking help because it's probably depression. Depression isn't sadness, but even if you're sad and not depressed, show yourself some care. No one is happy all the time. No one has a perfect life. Everybody hurts sometimes. Everyone gets angry. And it's ok. Let's not perpetuate yet another unattainable ideal which is "the perfect life sans any emotion but joy". Our ideas of what we think is beautiful and what looks right, what's acceptable and what's a fashion faux pas are learnt and make sense only within a certain frame of reference.
