Ilwol obongdo is a folding screen depicting the five mountain peaks, the sun, the moon, and pine trees that were placed on the back of the royal palace in the Joseon dynasty. It is called many names, Ilwol Obongbyeong, Ilwol Oakdo, and Ilwol Konryundo. Kim Hongdo, one of the most famous artists in Korea, drew it. It was painted with a portrait of King Sejong on the front of the 10000 won. Ilwol Obongdo is not only a symbol of the kingship, but was created with the intention of wishing for the people’s peace of mind. Ilwol Obongdo, this symbolic meaning is said to be interpreted as an expression of a poem called Cheonbo in Sikyung, the ancient truth of Confucian scriptures. This poem is about praising the virtue of the king and praying for the blessing of heaven and ancestors to the king. There is the moon on the left, and the sun on the right in Ilwol Obongdo. It consists of the mountain of five peaks where two streams of waterfall flow. And a pine tree painted at the front. The feature of this painting is a ‘left-right symmetry’ that gives a very majestic feeling. The fact that the sun and the moon are hung in the sky at the same time does not symbolize the coexistence of day and night, but is said to mean plus and minus, the principles of the sky. In addition, the sun and moon means jagangbulsik, meaning that you do not rest on your own. The meaning of the five peaks has a variety of meanings. It means the five elements inuiyejisin-benevolent, righteous, wise, and trustworthy- or the east, west, south, north, and center, and expresses the five famous mountains in Korea. The two pairs of pine trees means the existence that connects the earth and the sky. The red color is red pine, which was considered the most sacred and precious among pine trees. The part of the land has a shape of continuous clouds, and 70% represents Korea, a mountainous area. It was always behind the king, and when he died, it was also buried. And when there is only Ilwol Obongdo, it is not a completed painting, but only when the king sits to make Ilwol Obongdo.
Sijo is Korea’s representative formal poem. Appeared in the middle of Corea, the form itself began to develop at the end of Corea, and in the Joseon dynasty, it became fashionable to sing the song like a relaxed song by adding a rhythm to this sijo without accompaniment. Its basic form consists of 3 chapters, 6 phrases and 45 characters. The 3 chapters are called Chojang (the first length), Jungjang (the middle length), and Jongjang (the end length) respectively. Each chapter has 3434 3434 3543 words, but there may be a difference by one or two letters. What must be observed is that the first note (first phrase) of the final chapter must be three letters. Sijo can be divided into three types: Pyeongsijo, Saseolsijo, and Eotsijo.
Pyeongsijo is a work that correctly obeys the basic form. An example work is Jeong Mongju’s Dansimga.
이 몸이/ 죽고 죽어/ 일백 번/ 고쳐 죽어
(This body dies, dies, heals 100 times, dies)
백골이/ 진토 되어/ 넋이라도/ 있고 없고
(The white bone becomes mud and dirt, and there is no soul)
임 향한/ 일편단심이야/ 가실 줄이 이시랴
(It is a one-sided feeling towards you. Do you think it will disappear?)
(/ means the part that reads it off)
Saseolsijo is a form that keeps the basics of the Pyeongsijo and extends each chapter, Chojang remains the same, and Jungjang or Jongjang, or both are expanded, or sometimes the sentence structure is repeated. In the late Joseon Dynasty, it is presumed to be popularized as it is also popular with rich farmers and wealthy merchants.
Eotsijo keeps 3 chapters and 6 phrases, but one part is stretched. An example work is ‘The fish in the front pond’
앞 못에 든 고기들아 누가 너를 몰아다가 넣었기에 들어 있느냐
(Fish in the front pond, who took you and put it in?)
북해의 맑은 연못을 어디 두고 이 못에 와 들었느냐
(Where did you leave the clear pond in the North Sea, and did you come to the pond?)
들고도 나오지 못 하는 정은 너나 나나 다를 것이 있겠느냐
(Is there anything different between you and me than the ones that can’t come out even when you carry them?)
If you observe that the first syllable in the end is 3 notes, you can write Sijo. How about writing a sijo?
There are many types of food representing Korea such as bulgogi and fried rice. But I think Kimchi is the most famous food among them. It is a food seasoned with vegetables that are picked in salt water and fermented to enhance storage properties. Besides spicy and salty kimchi, there are various kinds of kimchi.
Cabbage kimchi is one of the types of kimchi, it is made by dividing whole cabbage, picking it in salt water, and mixing seasoning. As it is a representative kimchi among the kinds of kimchi, when it comes to kimchi, it refers to cabbage kimchi and is eaten the most. Also, most of the dishes using kimchi, such as kimchi stew, kimchi fried rice, kimchi jeon, and kimchi guk, are generally used as cabbage kimchi. Kkakdugi is a kimchi made by diced radish into square cubes, marinated in salt, mixed with red pepper powder or other seasonings. It goes well with selleongtang. The ingredients and the way it is made before cutting it are similar to Chonggak kimchi, but the size is very different in that it can be eaten relatively finely. Chonggak kimchi leaves less spicy taste left in the radish when kimchi has been prepared, and the characteristic spicy taste of radish remains strong. Of course, it will be resolved when it matures over time. Because it is kimchi that has just been established the recipe, there are very few variations. Wherever you go in Korea, people tend to mix the whole chopped radish with red pepper seasoning. Dongchimi is water kimchi made with radish as the main ingredient. It is one of the oldest types of kimchi. It has a history of at least four times longer than red cabbage kimchi, which is recognized as a representative of kimchi. There are so many kinds of kimchi in Korea. There is even ‘Kimchi game’, which is a game that wins if there is no search result by Google after saying the name of a vegetable that is unlikely to be made with kimchi and kimchi. Foods you do not even think about are made into kimchi.
In Korea, we use won to count money. Its mark is ₩. There is one, five, ten, fifty, one hundred, and five hundred won in coin, and one thousand, five thousand, ten thousand, and fifty thousand won in bill. But one won and five won were not used well. The way we get that coins is to go bank and ask them to exchange. Behind 1 won, there is rose of Sharon, a national flower. Turtle ship, which was used in Imjin War, is drawn on the back of 5 won. Dabotap, Korean traditional tower, is at 10 won. In 50 won, there is rice plant. And General Yi Sunsin and crane are depicted at 100 and 500 won, respectively.
In front of 1000 won, there is Lee Hwang who was a scholar in Joseon Dynasty. And behind it, a house is drawn, which was used Lee Hwang’s school and was drawn by Jeong Seon in the past.
There is Lee I on the front of 5000 won. And a watermelon is depicted at back side, which is drawn by Lee I’s mother, Sin Saimdang.
In 10000 won, there is King Sejong. He was a king in Joseon Dynasty and made hangul. And back side, there is honcheonui, celestial sphere, which was made by Jang Yeongsil a Joseon’s scientist. Why did they draw celestial sphere there? Because, in the past, Korea is an agricultural society so the people were sensitive to the climate.
On the front side of 50000 won, there is Sin Saimdang. She is a representative good wife and wise mother. She was good at drawing and writing poem. Lee I and Sin Saimdang became the world’s first family to be drawn on money. On the back of it, a picture of plum blossoms and bamboos which Eo Mongryong and Lee Jeong each drew is depicted. In Joseon, people valued four plants, plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo. They considered people had to follow those plants’ traits.
The main meal of Korea is rice. There are many TV programs that introduce a recipe of eating rice simply like Three Meals a Day (삼시세끼) and House Cook Master Baek (집밥 백선생). Eating meal, Korean must eat fried rice. They consider it a dessert. Even when Korean say hello, they usually say did you eat rice? And when they say goodbye, they say let’s eat rice later. The old saying that Seem to eat rice which means do often. Koreans enjoy eating rice porridge, nurungji(누룽지), etc. even if they don’t necessarily eat. Then what is the start of eating rice so much? According to the remaining documents, we have eaten rice since the Baekje period which existed in 4C. Rice was used to buying products. That’s why rice is important in Korea. If you come Korea, I recommend eating rice once.
