Korean Grammar - Regular Conjugation(규칙 활용) Advanced ver.

Hello, this is Admin Hee. Today’s grammar will be regular conjugation.

Regular conjugation

The regular change of form of predicate in Korean grammar such as verbs and adjectives. At this point the predicate of a clause is the part of it that is not the subject and it consists of a stem and ending.

-Stem : unchanging part of the predicate

보- is the stem of the forms ‘보다’, ‘보니’, ‘보고’

-Ending : changing part

-다. -니, -고 is the ending of the forms ‘보다’, ‘보니’, ‘보고’

    1. ‘ㅡ’ Elision  (’ㅡ’ 탈락)

‘ㅡ’ is elided in front of the stem ‘-아/어’, ‘-았/었-’

담그- + -아 = 담가

슬프- + -어 = 슬퍼

아프다 + 아서/어서 = 아파서

Such verbs or adjectives like 끄다, 크다, 바쁘다, 따르다 are examples.

2. ‘ㄹ‘ Elision (’ㄹ’ 탈락)

When the last sound of the stem ‘ㄹ’ meets ‘ㄴ,ㅂ,ㅅ,오’ , it gets elided too.

살- + -는 = 사는

살- + -ㅂ니다 = 삽니다

살- + -오 = 사오

살다, 놀다, 울다, 불다, 얼다, 멀다 and so on are the examples.

Additionally, nouns that ends up with consonant ‘ㄹ’, gets elided when it is combined with ‘ㄴ,ㅅ’ which is the first sound of the next word. This is not about the conjugation of verbs and adjectives but are also called ‘ㄹ’ 탈락.

버들+나무 = 버드나무

솔+나무 = 소나무

딸+님 = 따님

❄️동짓날(Winter Solstice)❄️

Long time no see! This is Admin Hee. This time I’m going to tell you about special day in Korea.

Dongjinnal(동짓날) is the 22nd season of the 24th season, with the longest nights and shortest days of the year. Usually it is around December 21 or 22 in solar calendar when the sun is located at 270 degrees southbound of the equator. Also the cold starts to get stronger from this time.

The celebration was so important that it was recognized as the second most important day after Lunar New Year’s Day. This perception made such words like “You’ll get a year older if the winter solstice passes.” or “You have to eat red bean porridge to get one year older. Here we can see what we eat this day.

The picture you see right above is red bean porridge. Boil red beans to make porridge and put something like rice cakes made of glutinous rice and boil them together. Even though family members gathered and ate together, people had more diverse thoughts at that time. For example, they thought the red color of red beans drove away evil spirits. It was also effective in boosting immunity and overcoming the cold.

Like I said above, the celebration was so big this day. Let’s take a look how they celebrated in palace. They hosted a banquet called Hoeryeyon and appointed talented people by conducting the test ; civil service examination called gwageoje.

For ordinary people, they cooked red bean porridge not to get old and not to get sick. Also there was a custom in which daughters-in-low used to make Korean socks to their mother-in-law.

Introducing Ramen in Korea (우리나라 라면 소개)

Have you ever seen a black noodle or a spicy noodle? In Korea, we have all kinds of noodles including what I mentioned earlier. We call them, 라면(Ramen)!

The ramens below are the most common.

The first is 신라면( Shin Ramen ).

Weight - 120g Calorie - 500kcal Launch year - 1986.10 Company - 농심(Nongshim)

It is a noodle with a spicy taste that suits our taste. Its name, the first word 신(Shin) of 신라면(Shin Ramen), means “spicy” in Chinese character. Also, it is taking the lead in globalizing the taste of Korea by exporting it to many countries around the world.

But what you have to careful is about allergy component. There are pork, egg, beef which can cause your body a trouble. According to 농심(Nongshim), 3 million are sold every day. 

Its market share is about 25%, higher than the 10% share of other top instant noodles. Like a ramen with a long history there are many advertisements where famous celebrities appeared as models, such as the soccer player 손흥민(Son Heung-min), 박지성(Park Jisung) . Among some of them there is a famous song about it too. Further more, nowadays, there are more improved version like 육개장 신라면(Yukgaejang Shin Ramen), 김치 신라면(Kimchi Shin Ramen), 신라면 건면(Shin Ramen dry noodles).

Second, it is 불닭볶음면( Spicy chicken noodle ).

Weight - 140g Calorie - 530kcal Launch year - 2012.4 Company - 삼양(Samyang)

This is kind of ramen made with stir-fried food as a motif and mixed without soup. This is so hot that it is called even Koreans who eat spicy food often crumble. It is too spicy for me as well.. Until the first bite, it feels just spicy but if you continue to eat it, it can even give you a pain for those who are not used to it. 

To solve this problem ,when you feel too spicy you can have some milk or tomato juice to calm down yourself. Because of its crazy spicy taste, it is receiving great attention no only at Korea but also abroad.

Further more, the company released a various version that is made with cheese powder, black bean sauce, carbonara sauce and mara sauce . They lower the strong spiciness of the original noodle while also taking responsibility for the new taste.

Lastly, it is a black noodle that I mentioned at first, 짜파게티( Chapagetti ).

Weight - 140g Calorie - 610kcal Launch year - 1984.03 Company - 농심(Nongshim)

Although it is a product made by powdered black bean sauce, the texture of ramen is different from that of black bean noodles and the taste of the sauce is subtly different. Compared to other black bean noodles, it is characterized by a combination of sweet and sour taste and is considerably thicker than other noodles. After you boil noodles, you have to throw away the water, and then mix them with the sauce. At this point, do you know the director Bong Joon-ho(봉준호)? A few days ago, he was awarded a prize for a movie Parasite(기생충). If you have seen this movie, you might be able to make a guess about what I'm trying to say. It is about 짜파구리( Jjapaguri )! In the movie they eat Jjapaguri which is a recipe that is cooked with another ramen. I guess this is the most famous recipe nowadays because of the Parasite. If you haven't tried it, I recommend you to try it!

A painter of the Joseon Dynasty, Shin Yun-bok (신윤복) + Vocab

신윤복 was born in 1758 (영조 34). He is believed to have come from a middle-aged family and is believed to have started painting since he was a child. His childhood name was Gagwon (가권) and later renamed Yun-bo (윤복). However, only a small part of his life has been passed down, making it difficult to track his track record. 

Along with Kim Hong-do and Kim Deuk-shin, he is also referred to as one of the top three genre painters of the Joseon Dynasty. He was good at landscape painting and genre painting. He developed a genre painting that was vey different from Kim Hong-do, from selecting materials and expressing colors. While Kim Hong-do dealt with the simple and common people's customs, Shin Yun-bok mainly depicts the customs of the aristocratic class, love between men and women, and a pleasant life. Rather than accusing or criticizing the times through genre paintings, he emphasized romantic trends and humor. 

But in 1800, his work entered into a period of decline. His work is believed to have passed down to 1813 and is presumed to have died in 1814.

Let's take a look at some of his famous works!

<미인도>

It is a kind of painting that depicts a typical woman from the late Joseon Dynasty. It is kept in the Gansong Art Museum.

<월하정인>

It means two lovers under the moon. As you can see, it is a picture of man and woman enjoying a secret relationship. It is kept in the Gansong Art Museum.

<단오풍정>

The painting depicts a group of women who came out to swing on the Dano day, hanging swings on the stream and enjoying themselves in the stream. It is kept in the Gansong Art Museum too.

🇰🇷 Hanbok(한복), Korean Traditional Costume 🇰🇷

Hi! This is Admin Hee here. I’ll introduce you the traditional costume of Korea, 한복(Hanbok).

We wear these clothes on special day such as wedding day, traditional holiday like new year's day. On New Year's Day, we wear Hanbok and make a New Year's bow to our parents, grandmother, grandfather, and other family members. Then we get a new year's cash!

Hanbok has a history of over 1600 years. During the Three Kingdoms Period(삼국시대), there were saek-dong skirts(색동치마), long skirts for the upper classes, and short skirts for the lower classes. During the United Silla Period, they were made of fine cloth, similar to modern skirts. During the Goryeo Dynasty(고려시대), the length of the skirt was determined by the length of the jeogori.

- Classification of Hanbok

For women : 

Big skirt - Chima(치마)

Short coat - Jeogori(저고리)which is the top of Hanbok. Up to this point, it is the basic attire of hanbok.

Outer coat - Magoja(마고자)

For men : 

Big pant - Baji(바지)  

Long top - Jeogori(저고리) 

Overcoat - Durumagi(두루마기) which you can think of as a ceremonial robe and a kind of winter clothes

Now, the first thing about Hanbok's excellence is beauty. The harmony of the color and the flow of the line is very beautiful. It has five-sided color like yellow, blue, white, red and black. Through these colors, Hankbok represents the beauty of fancy and elegant. Second, it possess practicality. Since the shape is A-line and has a blank space, it can cover the disadvantage of your body shape. Also even if your body shape changes, you can easily change the clothes form of it. In addition, it is a well-established costume suitable for the climate and lifestyle. For the last, Hanbok is economical. It is well-ventilated and made of eco-friendly materials. It also has activity and functionality.

Nowadays, there is an improved Hanbok(개량 한복). These are made in medium length top, easily washable material. Do you guys know BTS Jungkook? He is famous for fancier of Hanbok. Further on, not only Jungkook but also BTS showed the Hanbok. In the music video of Idol, they wore Hanbok designed designed colorful and fancy.

“How you like that?” I think many of you might have heard of this song! This is the latest release of BLACKPINK's new song. As you can see the picture they are wearing fancy clothes. Don't forget it. This is Hankbok! I've read an article that many people think of this dress as a Japanese kimono. But remember this! It is korean Hanbok!

What I usually do in the Jojal-jojal team: I have written posts. Some of you may have already noticed but I'm not really ‘new’ to Jojal-jojal. I’ve been working with Admin Sun, Do, and Yu for the past 5 months and have written posts like ‘Learn Korean with Kdramas’, ‘Learn Korean with Songs’, ‘Dalgona Coffee’ etc(I hope you enjoyed them:D). And also I am planning to record all of Jojal-jojal’s activities and manage the attendance/budget of the blog.

Favorite Subject: My favorite subject is English and Korean! Also, I’m totally into biology these days, too.

Things I like: I’m a big fan of IU. I enjoy watching Kdramas starring IU(You should definitely watch ‘Hotel Deluna’ it’s so good). My favorite songs are ‘Twenty three’, ‘That was green’, ‘Red Queen’, and ‘glasses’. I like to go to gastroventures and experience delicious new food. I also love to travel! It makes me refresh my mind and helps me release stress. Visiting new places, experiencing new cultures, and meeting new people is always exciting! Since I am a teenager right now, I have restrictions on travelling, but as soon as I become an adult, I want to visit many places I haven't been to.

My hobbies: I really enjoy reading both Korean and English novels. They make me think about stuff I would never even get interested in, let me feel a lot of emotions, and they also teach me a lot, too. (Sometimes I write them myself although it's terrible😂)

Random facts about me:

It’s almost 12 a.m. right now in Korea, but I’m wide awake, introducing myself to you guys.:D

I used to be able to speak only in English accent when I was little, but now I can speak in both English and American since most of the people here speak in an American accent.

As I said, I really love to travel, and the place where I most want to go is Venecia.

I suck at Dynamics.. wonder how science could be super interesting and hard at the same time.

What I usually do in the jojal-jojal team: I usually write posts and am in change of technical work. Besides, l am a blog management. I am freshman of this team. So, I'm going to learn hard from predecessors and try to provide more various posts for you!

Favorite subject: My favorite subject is PE (physical education).

Things I like: My interest is movies that contain the history of Korea. They are more interesting for me rather than I learned the history of Korea. Because history movies are more deeper and vivider than history that I learned at school. Sometimes I was empathized the movie, so I cried many times. Maybe, If you are interested in the history of Korea, I recommend you movies like 항거(A resistance), 암살(assassination), 명량(Roaring currents) , 대장 김창수(Man of will), 택시운전사(A taxi driver), and 천문(Forbidden Dream).

My hobbies: My hobby is reading novels. Especially, I like reading romance novels.

I didn’t go to the school because of COVID- 19. So, I am getting fat because I stayed at home and ate a lot.

Now, I make up my mind to exercise. But, I have been on a diet for 10 years just by words. :D

Favorite Subject: My favorite subject is music. i like singing and listening to music. My favorite music are SHINee’s Dream Girl and ONF’s New World. 

Things I like (My interests): I love The Boyz who is an idol group of Korea. They sing well. My favorite The Boyz’s songs are water and Right here. My favorite member is Sunwoo, and he is very cute. 

My hobbies: I like singing music. And I also like to fill coloring book. But I am so lazy that I have never finished coloring books.

My height is 168. I think I am tall, but I want to have short height. Because I think the most ideal height is 165.

Favorite Subject : My favorite subject is English and bioscience. I think studying in New Zealand is the main reason why I started to like English.

Things I like : I like watching movies. I really enjoyed ‘The Avengers’ , ‘Maze runner’. I also like to hang out with my friends. When I’m bored or when I have nothing to do sometimes I call my friends. I really like talking and spending times with people. It happens in foreign countries too! When I travel, I like to talk with foreigners, new people.

Things I like (My interests): These days, I love going school ! After almost half years of house cock life, I really wanted to go school. When I met my friends at school, I was so happy :D Other than this, I like watching movie at the movie theater. It helps me to refresh and keep having positive energy.

My hobbies: In my free time, I enjoy looking around Instagram. Instagram gives me a big fun and huge amount of information and tips. For the rest of the time, I just prefer sleeping to restore energy.
