Hello everyone, this is admin Sung. Today, I’m going to introduce you about Korean traditional beverage. Before we start, it is good to know that in the past, the concepts of beverages, medicine, cooking, snacks, and desserts were mixed together without the established concept of beverages. So the things that may be seen as beverages might have been classified as food or medicine. What I’m going to talk about is symbolic drinks other than alcohol such as sikhye(식혜), sujeonggwa(수정과), tea, fruit tea, etc. It is no exaggeration to say that even though there have been symbolic drinks since the Three Kingdoms Period(삼국시대), the various developments have been made since the Joseon Dynasty(조선시대).
We can classify drinks into ten major categories ; Tea(차), tang(탕), jang(장), sudsu (숙수), galsu(갈수), misu(미수), sikhye(식혜), milsu(밀수), hwachae(화채), juices(즙).
Now, here are some examples of beverage.
Sikhye식혜
Sikhye is a traditional Korean beverage made by soaking rice in malt-flourmed water. It has a sweet taste and a cheap aroma of ginger. Malt is sweet and warm in nature. Because of the effects of malt(맥아), which treats indigestion, abdominal bloating, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, Sikhye is a drink that goes well with national holidays, birthdays, and sweets.
Omijacha 오미자차
It is a Korean-style tea made by pouring water into dried Omija and slowly decocting it over low heat and adding honey and sugar. There are ways to put Omija in boiling water and leave it overnight, then drink it when Omija water comes out, or to mix Omija into powder and drink it in boiling water. Omijacha has long been known as a special remedy for coughing in Chinese medicine, and it is effective to drink when the voice is hoarse.
Yuja-cha 유자차
For Yuja-cha, two or three pages of thinly sliced yuja are put in a bowl of boiling water and drunk, or the tea made from yuja blue is used most widely.
Sujeonggwa 수정과
Sujeonggwa is also called ' sujeon-gwa', which is a traditional beverage with a distinctive flavor, in which dried persimmons and ginger are boiled and cooled, and dried garnish such as dried persimmons and pine nuts is floated, so that the sweetness of dried persimmons and the pungency of cinnamon and ginger are well harmonized. The word originally means sweets soaked in water, and on Lunar New Year's holidays, it is a drink that is made and drunk coldly with sikhye. Anyone can easily make it. The Ministry of Government was first introduced in <수작의궤> and described in detail in <군학회동>, <시의전서>, etc.
Misutgaru 미숫가루
Misutgaru is made by frying various healthy grains such as brown rice, wheat, beans, yulmu, glutinous rice, sesame seeds, and perilla so as not to destroy nutrients as much as possible. Most people only recognize wheat flour as a summer drink, but in fact wheat flour is a good alternative to eating. Eating misutgaru is the same as eating pure grains containing various nutrients, so it has the same effect as eating a bowl of rice.
Flower tea 꽃차
A tea made by using flowers or by mixing flowers in tea.
Maesilcheong 매실청
Maesilcheong is a plum-made grain syrup. Drink plum tea or use as a sweetened condiment. In Jeollanam-do, it is made by removing seeds, stirring ripe yellow maesil and sugar in a glass bottle to marinate for three days, then pouring water, and boiling them for five to six hours.
Korean Grammar - Intransitive Verb & Transitive Verb (자동사&타동사)
Hello everyone! This is Admin Sung. Today we’re going to talk about intransitive verbs and transitive verbs. Firstly, verbs show the movement of people or things. There are verbs like run (뛰다) or make(만들다). And in terms of functions, we can divide verbs into two categories: intransitive verb and transitive verb. So in this post, I will talk about them.
The basic concept of these is quite similar to that of English grammar.
1. Intransitive Verb 자동사
Intransitive verbs are verbs that predicate’s meaning only affects subjects. In the word 자동사, ‘자’ means ‘by oneself’, and this states that it does not need object. It only requires subject to create a full sentences, and the modifier is optionally added.
Examples sentences:
철수가 운다. (철수 cries.)
물이 흐른다. (Water flows.)
영희가 뛴다. (영희 runs.)
As you can see, ‘cry’ , ‘flow’ and ‘run’ each represent the movement of ‘철수’ , ‘물(water)’, and ‘영희’. They can only be seen to be responsible for the narrative function of the subject of the sentence. Like this, a verb that requires only subject is called intransitive verb.
Additionally, every passive verbs are intransitive verbs.
* some intransitive verbs:
(꽃이) 피다 : bloom
(바람이) 불다 : blow
(아이가) 울다 : cry
(경치가) 보이다 : to be seen
(도둑이) 잡히다 : to be caught
(소리가) 들리다 : to be heard
2. Transitive Verb 타동사
Intransitive verbs are verbs that predicate’s meaning affects subjects and even to the object. In the word 타동사, ‘타’ means ‘others’, and this states that it does need object : it’s essential. It requires both subject and object to create a full sentences, and the modifier is optionally added.
Examples sentences:
철수가 밥을 먹는다. (철수 eats a meal.)
나는 컴퓨터를 샀다. (I bought a computer.)
In the sentences above, ‘eat’ and ‘buy’ each represents the movement of ‘철수’ and ’I’, taking the target of ‘a meal’ and ‘computer’. Like this, a verb that essentially requires object is called transitive verb.
Additionally, every causative verbs are transitive verbs.
* some transitive verbs:
(책을) 읽다 :read
(음악을) 듣다 :listen to
(음식을) 만들다 :make
(동생을) 울리다 :make (somebody) cry
(음식을) 남기다 : leave
3. Verbs that are used as both intransitive verb & transitive verb
What's interesting is that Korean verbs have verbs that are used as intransitive verb and transitive verb.
Constellation was not decided from the beginning to be a well-known constellation today. What was used in each country and region was integrated into one to form what is today's constellation.
The origin of today's constellations is Western European constellations, which originated in the Semitic nomadic Chardians who lived in the Babylonian region around thousands BC. They started to build constellations after looking up at the night sky and connecting bright stars to animals while keeping livestock and moving along the blue vegetation. Twelve constellations, including sheep, bulls, twins, crabs, lions, virgins, scales, scorpions, goats, water turtles, and Pisces, along the ecliptic, which is the path through which the sun and planets pass, are recorded in the area's landmark around B.C. 3000.
People assign constellations to the month and day of birth.
The following table shows it.
Chinese zodiac 12띠
Historical relics and records show the origin of twelve-year-old animals, which are different from folk tales. The Chinese zodiac signs were represented by imitating the shape of stars to observe natural cycles such as constellations and seasonal changes. The twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac are based on the state in which everything changes from spring to winter depending on the season. The twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac were widely used in the Yin Dynasty in China, and in the middle of the Han Dynasty, the twelve signs of the zodiac were connected in terms of time and defense.
We can write these as ‘the year of (the) ~’.
ex) 2015 was the year of sheep.
60Gapja 60갑자
Sixty-thousand characters refer to 60 ganji made by combining Cheongan and Jiwon. There are 60 from Gapja to Gyehae. This is why in Korea, we celebrate when one become 61 years old and 60 years old in Korean age.
The 60s are deeply related to ancient Babylonian Sumerian mathematics, which is recognized as the first civilization of mankind. Sixty characters are the number of 60 cases in which ten chapters and twelve chapters meet. Scholars estimate that the decimal system has the origin of ten fingers of a person, and the decimal system is a cycle of twelve months a year.
