Bi Positivity

 I found this article about the positives of being bisexual. 

I think it’s important that somewhere we find good things. There are articles for days about unemployment, poor health and general biphobia but we need to remember how being part of the bi community can be a good happy thing!

As the language is not the nicest language (academics grrr...) I’ve made a rough summary below

The article is about a group of bi people from various countries who were given a survey (age/gender/etc) and some boxes to write down positive things about identifying as bi. I’ve summarised most of the main points:

-Many of the bi people liked that they felt they can see past binary systems; they like that they are somewhat free from these constraints.

-They also reported more freedom with gender roles and gender expression.

-Being able to ID as bi gave the participants a sense of validity and self-acceptance.

-Many participants feel they are more independent thinkers as a result of identifying as bi, and they like being unique.

-Lots of them also said that they are able to appreciate individual differences and felt less judgey as a result of being bi.

-Many thought that realising your bisexuality takes more self-exploration, reflection and insight than it does for their gay/straight peers. Because of this, they feel they are more self-aware than a lot of the people they know.

-They like that they can be attracted to a wider set of people. Some said they like not being confined to one gender, and they are more able to appreciate/fall in love with other characteristics besides anatomy.

-Being outsiders in both the straight and gay communities, the bi interviewees felt they had a greater appreciation of the impact of oppression and discrimination that affects lots of groups, nit just LGBT ones.

-They also like the strong sense of community that comes with IDing as bi, and see themselves as educators and activists for under-represented and oppressed groups.

Bitalks Topic #23: Bi at Pride

This is a long post so I’ve put in a read more:

Have you been to a Pride event? If so, why did you decide to go? If not, why did you decide not to go?

I went to my first pride (Birmingham, UK) this year with my university’s LGBTQ society. It was brilliant as we took part in the parade so I sort of threw myself into it! I hadn’t been to one before as in my hometown there isn’t a lot of LGBT stuff and I wasn’t out while I lived there.

 If you’ve been to a Pride parade/event, what were your experiences? Did you feel accepted?

Pride was amazing. Just amazing. I am going to put it down as one of the defining experiences of my life. This may seem a bit OTT but it was definitely one of the happiest days of my life and it took me about a week to come off the pride-high! I have never felt more self-assured or proud of myself than when I marched through the centre of the city wearing rainbow face paint and my flag-cape. It was also such a stark contrast to my pre-uni closeted self and wow it just made me so overwhelmingly happy. I can’t quite put the feeling of validation and pride and happiness into words.

Because I went along with my uni soc I felt very accepted as there are a lot of bi/ace people in it. Also, there was a lot of diversity within the parade, from uni students to drag queens to union members; people from all walks of life were there.

I didn’t go into the main bit as I hadn’t pre-bought a ticket so it would have cost me a lot. I think next year I might get a ticket. Also this year it was Eurovision (google it) that evening, so I didn’t want to spend ages in town. Hopefully I will experience full pride next time!

 This one has rather obvious answers, but what needs to be done by LGBT community and Pride event holders, to make bi folks feel accepted at Pride?

V important: Don’t call it gay pride. Use inclusive language to make everyone feel, well, included.

Also I think in the UK there needs to be more nationwide bi organisations. In the north, where I live when I’m not at uni, there is nothing as most organisations are London/South based. I think information stands/help who experience biphobia might help, just so that people can see we have a presence, even if they don’t necessarily pick up a leaflet.

I also think bi people need to be proud of who they are. We are awesome and so at an event like pride, wear your colours and don’t be afraid to call people out on their biphobia.
