Last night we were all huddled round our TVs, munching through our Christmas chocolates, eagerly awaiting the result of ITV1's Ad of the Year countdown.
There were some absolute corkers in there - many of which have appeared on our blog / Facebook page / Twitter feed at some point throughout the last 12 months.
Here's how the top 20 Ads of 2011 list turned out:
1. Cravendale - Cats with Thumbs
2. T-Mobile - Parking Ticket
3. Volkswagen - The Force
5. Cancer Research UK - Couples
6. British Airways - The Aviators
7. John Lewis - Never Knowingly Undersold: Through the Years
9. Lynx - Even Angels Will Fall
10. Cadbury - Charity Shop
11. Heineken - The Entrance
13. Old Spice - Smell Like a Man, Man
16. Kronenbourg 1664 - Madness / Baggy Trousers
17. Lucozade - The Arrival
20. The Sun - Football Brought to Life
We loved getting to see the behind the scenes footage and were surprised to see the number of ads that used oversized props. What a great idea - who needs CGI when you can have real people dressed in teddy bear costumes, giant items of clothing or wearing massive cat paws?
We also loved the amount of ads in the shortlist that used real people to bring their campaign to life, that just wouldn't have been the same using actors. T-Mobile's 'Parking Ticket' worked because the public were genuinely shocked; and Cancer Research UK's 'Couples' worked because they were real people, genuinely affected by cancer. No actor could have recreated the pain on the face of the gentleman at the end of the ad - Roger Tapp - who had lost his daughter to a brain tumour.
My personal favourite Ad of the Year has got to be Old Spice's 'Smell Like a Man, Man' - which I have to say, I am shocked only made it into the Number 13 slot!
If its male lead, Isaiah Mustafa, alone wasn't enough, the hilariously arrogant script already placed this advert at the top of my Ads of the Year list. However, learning that the whole ad was filmed in one take (yes, really) has just propelled it to a whole new level for me - it should at least be in the top 10!
Standing on a boat set, with a bathroom placed around him, our amazingly scented man simply delivered his lines looking straight to camera and walked a few steps to the left onto a rig... The bathroom is lifted out of shot on a crane, a shirt drops around his shoulders and the rig lifts him seamlessly onto a horse! Amazing!
With such an incredible array of adverts produced in 2011, here at Force-7 HQ, we are all excited and eager to see what 2012 has in store for our viewing pleasure!
