Grief in the dark
Again putting this under a cut for themes of grief and child loss
Painful anniversaries weren’t something that came up in conversation that often between Serena and Baron. From Serena’s point of view this was in part because Baron hadn’t been there when she’d lost her daughter, so it felt funny to bring her up that often, but also because they’d both been through so much grief that, to Serena at least, it wasn’t something that had to be mentioned. It was a cloud that hung around them both and Serena felt that had brought a silent understanding to their relationship.
Still, that didn’t help nor comfort her this day. Unwilling to go out at night, now that she knew what lurked out there, but unable to sleep, Serena found herself wrapped in a blanket and sat in a bay window, one hand clutching a mug of coffee, and the other holding one of Ellie’s childhood cuddly toys. Staring out of the window and into the foggy dark of the very early morning, tears tracked silent paths down her cheeks as Serena let herself dwell on what the day to come was. Five years. Five whole years since she’d lost her daughter.
