Why hullo, Adrien Lamarque, dhampir Oracle of Bones who is pure of heart but dumb of ass, and who I just finished playing in a homebrew Pathfinder mini adventure (aka "Chillfinder")~ Basically the elevator pitch was: "low int/wis pretty-boy dhampir who has been tracked down by his estranged vampire dad and is so desperately happy to have a real family that he’s willing to do ANYthing that Father Dearest asks him to do for a crumb of attention/affection". Cue a bunch of jokes with the DM along the lines of "I’ve always wanted a father and he promised to play catch with me after I help slaughter his enemies!", followed by the misadventure of us figuring out what Father Dearest looked like and accidentally making legally distinct Castlevania Dracula before leaning into it (neither of us know shit about Castlevania lol oops; THEN we found out that Alucard's real name is Adrian??? skfjsklfjsd OOPS AGAIN). Anyway, poor Adrien's Oracle curse is essentially vampirism, but he's a good boy and has fed on animals all his life—until Father Dearest surreptitiously introduced him to Not-Animal-Blood, for...reasons? :Uc So now we have a dhampir being sent out on missions and unknowingly rewarded with humanoid blood each time he returns successfully to his father's estate. Which is fine! Adrien's so happy! Tasty blood in a glass! SO fancy! :D Aaand then he's sent on a mission that reunites him with his old adventuring party (this is a high-level campaign, so we imagined this was a reunion for a group that's traveled together for quite some time). The mission takes several days, meaning Adrien can't return to the estate to feed like he normally would. Animal blood doesn't taste the same. It's hard to focus. He's so hungy. :( And his old friends are rightfully concerned and suspicious. It all came out in the third session (thankfully in a far less violent way than it could have). Poor lad was pretty distressed to realize he's been drinking and craving people, but one of the other PCs grabbed his face and told him to channel that anxious energy into killing the big bad evil guy once we find him. The player described the moment as the Idiot Sandwich meme, so...couldn't resist. :'D After our party defeated the BBEG (in the most excessive way imaginable; we did a group charge and brought him down from nearly full health to -289 hp), Adrien called up Father Dearest on his rocky-talky to confront him about "feeding me people blood, why didn't you tell me, frowny-face". Father claimed he wanted to ease Adrien into it without upsetting him (being sensitive about his curse), and that the blood he was given was ethically sourced...and since Adrien really wants to believe his father has his best interests at heart, he is cautiously content to return to the estate. Is it a happy ending for this lad? Is he being hopelessly manipulated? [yes] Will he be happy either way?? Who knows! But he was super fun to throw together for this little adventure, and a welcome inspiration for some doodles and comics~
