Okay I might get a couple of angry replies.
Every Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir fan hates the “She’s Just a Friend.” thing...
Except for me.
But the thing is I feel like the whole.
“She is just a friend.”
Thing is very necessary for the storyline.
Because remember, Adrien has never had a true friend who is with him because of his personality. He only had Chloe who sometimes seems like she only likes him because of his status in the world.
Marinette was his *first* true friend that he himself acknowledged was his friend.
Of course he needs to know that she is his friend before moving on to other things.
Not sure how many of you have read Percy Jackson and the Olympians but I’m going to compare the two.
In the series Percy never had true friends.
Before Annabeth and Grover. Annabeth is the first friends that Percy ever made on his own. Because Grover was told to be his friend (though in the end he appreciated their friendship and liked being his friend) but Annabeth was the first friend he made by himself with no help from others. A friend who was with him because they cared for him. That’s why the scene where Annabeth says “Because you’re my friend Seaweed Brain.” Is so important. Because it made Percy realize he had a true friend. Just like Adrien said “She’s just a friend.” He is confirming the fact that he does have a friend. And of course he values that friendship and it means the world to him. Statistics show that the best relationships are based of friendship.
For a relationship to be good you need to have more than romance.
You need trust and friendship.
And that’s what Adrien is building up with Marinette.
He already has the friendship part.
But he is slowly building up the trust part and is opening up to her.
In Percy Jackson Percy loses his memory.
But he can remember Annabeth.
Why?
Because they had something to their relationship besides romance.
For five years they built up a friendship built on trust and honesty.
So for Adrien he needs that as well.
Over time he will begin to realize that he am be himself with Marinette and they will form a close bond.
He will begin to realize how much of a hero Marinette is.
And will see all of those good qualities in her that he just can’t find in Ladybug.
Remember though Marinette *is* Ladybug, she is putting up a mask.
Like Adrien.
She is pretending to be this strong brave person.
So she can protect others.
She can’t show who she truly is because she has to put others lives first.
This mask is not something that gave her freedom like it did for Adrien.
This mask took away her freedom.
It gave her more responsibilities. Now she has to always think about how every action she makes can affect the lives of the citizens of Paris.
So when Adrien has that close bond with Marinette.
He will see those qualities in her that aren’t shown when she is Ladybug.
He will see these qualities and this person who is free to be herself when the mask is off and he will begin to love her.
Marinette will begin to see all the qualities he hides as Adrien and he will begin to show more of his Chat Noir.
Marinette will begin to live those features of him.
She will love his true self.
I think that’s why I love MariChat so much.
Because it’s the ship where both characters are their true self.
So if we begin to shift that aspect over to Adrienette it will be so much better.
Over time they will just fall in love with the others true self.
That’s when they can start dating.
When they have a close bond that is founded on friendship and trust.
A bond where they can be themselves.
Thats why I feel like the whole “She’s Just a Friend” schtick is so important to the story.
But thats just my perspective.
Tell me how you feel!?
