A belated Happy New Year! Ive been holding back making any posts because I wanted to have some sort of clarity - but truth is, there probably won't be much for some time! The only clarity I have to offer is that travelling is on hold for the foreseeable future - this is for two reasons: Firstly, as I mentioned a previous update, the words aren't flowing onto paper for any of our trips. A book gives us a platform to do more in terms of autism as well as raise funds. Secondly, there is the out standing issue around Sofia and school. It's complicated and I have to take it really slow as I don't want to regret whatever the outcome is. I also have to accept that even though Sofia doesn't live at home half the time, I can't take my finger off the trigger in the way one does as kids get more independent, as it is unlikely that this will change going forward even if school is changed, and unlikely that Sofia will be able to ever fend for herself in these types of situations until much later in life if at all. I'm not one to sit around though and Sofia still really wants to be a YouTuber. I've finally gotten over my reticence towards her career choice and will now focus on learning the ropes and setting up a channel roping her into it as much as she can be. I have no idea what I'm doing really so this should be fun 😄 the main thing is that she learns the ropes and learns what works and what doesn't.... Fab day on the #cabottrail yesterday - FINALLY saw a moose on the side of the road 🤪 and meet with the Cabot Trail Biker (@cabottrailbiker) who is of local renown, not least for his branded beer brewed and sold locally and is perhaps the best tour guide you can find for the trail! (Visit his website for info about the trail) We also stopped at The Dancing Goat in Margaree which makes the best cake I've ever tasted! The roads were fantastic! And I have to say that Meat Cove for me was more about the journey than the destination - a great little adventure! Today we are now heading in the direction of Halifax where we will likely arrive tomorrow or Friday. I've spoken quite a bit about preparing Sofia for #Canada, and we have some great clearly marked objectives. We may only achieve them in part, but it will still be a big success for her. Critical to this is going to be me. In the past travelling as been a survival effort for me. The critical aspect being getting her out & about & encouraging her to 'see' the wider world, to destress & if she learns a new skill or makes a development step then mission achieved & it was all worth it. This year is different. This year my own mental attitude is going to be a model for her main goal on this trip which is to find the present moment of 'doing'. So in the coming 3 months (eek! It's a little less now!) I will be pracitising being in my own zen & fortifying it as much as possible. This is not easy after 13 years of constant high stress & being entirely focused on her needs, but possible now she is at residential school so we are both now more independent of each other. Sofia is very ready right now to develop this scaffolding for self management evidenced by her increasing awareness of her world. This year on the bike she is aware of vulnerability for the first time & expressed nervousness about going down hills. She is also starting to show signs of reflective thought/self talk. She was zero out of 10 at Christmas, she is now 1 out of 10. This is a huge step forward & now there is a crack in the door I want to fill it with the most powerful strategy I know that will protect her from mental illness in the future.
