Hey folks, this is super out of left-field but:

I had a discussion with a couple writer friends of mine last night on this, and no one could really come up with a good answer. This was sort of sparked from me seeing (and queuing) a lot of fat acceptance posts recently, but it’s been on my mind for quite a long while.

I have multiple major (if not main) characters who are noticeably overweight. This certainly is not their only defining feature, definitely not, but it still is important to their character, and often to their backstories as well. Because of that, I’d like to make sure the reader knows that they are overweight, and I also describe the builds (and weights) of non-overweight characters too, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

My problem? I don’t know how to describe these characters being overweight in an acceptable, non-offensive manner.

Do I say “fat”, do I say “overweight”, do I say “chubby”? Recall my wip is set in the early 1700s, so the cast likely wouldn’t know what “overweight” is. I’ve done my own research on this and found directly describing characters as fat seems to be more widely accepted, but it’s variable, and I’d love for some first-hand sources.
