   This is the best day of Sirise’s life. 

   The adults were too worn out from their work to go down to the base to get whatever supplies they needed. Her mother was so tired that she hardly glanced her way. She thrust one of her PADDs in Sirise’s hand -- smooth, and not shattered, and pretty -- with a list of things to gather, and locked something around her neck. She’d promised that if Sirise didn’t return before a specified time, something on the collar would detonate, and she would die.  

   Sirise didn’t really think that was true, but it didn’t much matter to her. She was out! Even for a minute! Look, there were people all around her! Like she saw in pictures on her PADD. Wearing clothes, and talking. So much noise, and hardly any of it bad. So much warmer than she thought it’d be! So many more smells! 

   It was overwhelming. Kinda made her sick. But -- but she loved it. It was her first taste of what the rest of her life would one day be. 

   Now she knew what to prepare for. She had to soak all of this in! She had to remember it, and hold onto this, until she could be among them, for real! 

   Her hair was ragged, hurriedly tied back, but it’d obviously not been brushed in a long time, if ever. The clothes hanging from her body were hand-me-downs -- worn with holes, dirty, tied off at sections to stop from slipping off her frame entirely. Her face and hands, visible from between the fabric, had scars, cuts, bruises. Her left hand was wrapped in tight bandages from where she’d broken her wrist not long back. But still, Sirise walked proudly, excitedly, free from embarrassment of how she may be perceived. 

   ... Ow. 

   Only at the nagging bite on her foot does Sirise pause, let her brow furrow. For a moment, she leans against a metal support of a store, beams at the passerbys who look over, and glances at the bottom of her foot. Something sharp had gotten stuck in it from the floor. A bit of metal? A bit of glass? She pulls it out, frowning at it, and looks up for somewhere to dispose of it -- and for signage to lean her towards the first store on her list.

       “so it’s true, then! we’re really aligning with romulans.” lister, already on his third romulan ale of the night, doesn’t look like he’s complaining though. the young man swivels on his barstool, reaching down to move his guitar case away from the one next to him --- the only free spot in the joint, it seems --- to make room for the newcomer. “never thought i’d see the day. can’t really complain, i mean, you lot keep things interesting around here.” he takes a long drink, finishing it off, and waves to quark to get his attention. “didn’t think your kind was much for socializing, though.” he gestures around at the packed bar.

   You can do this, Moore. 

   Except, of course, that Moore wasn’t her name anymore. Not until she stepped back on a Federation ship and the course was charted for Betazed. No. Today, and now, and for the foreseeable future, she was S’anra Mirok. A bright-eyed Romulan Fleet sublieutenant, ready to see the stars. 

   She remembered this feeling. She remembered this excitement. She could do this, couldn’t she?

   Gods, help me. 

   Here it was. One of her first tests. Approaching her with heels pattering down the hallway. Ania -- S’anra -- pushed away from the bunks she was half-leaning against, smiled about a thousand degrees cooler than she was used to. “Jolan’tru!” She points to the bunk below hers. “Is this your spot?”

   Upon awaking, the first thing Aella senses is pain. It is not a wholly unusual situation. In fact, pain is something of a constant companion -- the closest thing she could truly refer to as friend. But the intensity grows, and grows, until it is difficult to convince herself what she feels are the intangible hands of memories, and she twitches. 

   She sees nothing. It takes a moment for dream-logged eyes to adjust, and then... she notices stone walls, slick with water and mold. A binding, cutting into her hands. And... another humanoid with green blood splashing their features, similarly bound, in the corner. 

    Panic rises in her throat, but she tries to edge it down. Is this a dream? Her back and face sting so severely that it is hard to believe it is. But... where is she? What happened?

     “ I am not losing my head and I do not see why you suggest I am. ” As much as she denied it and kept her voice calm though, her movements were getting more hectic. It was possibly the WORST moment to get nervous but there wasn’t much she could do about it. Though nothing could get her to acknowledge it in front of the Romulan woman. Besides, as much as her ... companion was obviously annoyed, Tara was still doing her best possible work. The door was closed in a matter of seconds and locked just as quickly. It was only a minor success though as they both knew knew it wouldn’t STOP their pursuers for long.

     “ Do you have any idea why these Klingons seem so keen on KILLING us? ” As far as she was aware there were no known local hostilities towards the Federation that they were aware of and while certain animosity towards the Romulans had been expected they had been sure that enough precautions had been made. A dangerously wrong assumption as it turned out. “ Actually, disregard that question. Do you know HOW they managed to find out where we would meet? ”

      “.....panic is an illogical response to fear. actually, many people mistakenly believe that is it fear itself that is illogical, but in fact, fear is completely rational. fear is what keeps us alive.” zack hesitates, taking a somewhat shaky breath. “of course, there is a small subset of highly logical beings that would consider fear to be extraneous, like all emotions.” like certain vulcans, perhaps? “i disagree. the important thing is to understand where the fear comes from. then you can conquer it.” he hugs his arms to his chest. “in this case, i am afraid because we are federation citizens, on a planet occupied by a hostile enemy. panic would do no good in this situation.” he glances back at the romulan standing in front of him. “......not that i see you as an enemy. specifically.”

Dhanna grunted, flopping backwards against the wall. “Areinnye,” came out in a sharp hiss. A Klingon d’k tahg protruded from near her hip – not near enough to anything to be fatal, but enough to hurt like hell. Noticing the Orion signing to her from nearby, her eyes quickly darted over the words on the readout. “Of course you can help. Are you a doctor?”

   Skin waxen, covered in a sheen of sweat. Body tense but still relatively able. Mind clearly still alert and aware. Yes. The gossamer screen beside her hardly lagged behind her motion and it followed her, weightlessly, as she stepped forward, began bracing her, offering support. What’s your name?

   “Wow! Look at you, being unusually cheery!” 

   It’s spoken very good-naturedly -- lips dimpled playfully. Another year closer to death. Huh. Somehow, this year, more than any other year, that stings. Maybe because she’s still so far from home. Because she’s still on Romulus, and her baby girl is... 

   “Is that what people say to you on your birthday?”
