Aerith/Reno, 33
33. Botanical Garden.
Modern AU
“Where are we going?”
Reno snorts at the transparency of her question. They both know he wasn’t about to tell her their destination, but her attempt was cute.
“It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if I told you.”
A flash of movement catches his eyes, Reno looks away from the road for a second to see Aerith reaching for the mask covering her eyes.
“Hey!” he snaps, hands clenching tightly to the steering wheel, “Leave the damn thing on.”
Aerith freezes mid-motion, a cute pout playing on her lips.
Reno sighs, rubbing at the back of his head as his attention turns back on the road, “Come on, princess, don’t be like that. You’ll ruin the surprise. We’re almost there. Just wait a little more.”
He could feel her settle back in her seat, arms crossed. A quick glance back over to her saw a small on her lips. Though he’d never openly admit it, it was quite a relief to see. He could never be too sure in telling when she was truly angry with him.
To say he was nervous was a bit of an understatement. This wasn’t his forte. He was known for his one night stands -- a dine ‘em and dash ‘em type. Yet here he was with the cute little flower shop owner tucked safely in the passenger seat with her eyes covered.
Rude might be proud. Tseng will probably shake his head in disappointment like he always does. And Zack will definitely try to kick his ass when he finds out he took his little sister out on a date. At least he has Tifa on his side -- Aerith’s best friend being the one to suggest their destination.
‘She’s been talking about finding time to visit for weeks. She’ll love it, trust me!’
Reno startles back into reality as a hand covers his. He lets Aerith gently pry it from the wheel, entwining their hands as she brings it down to her lap.
“Wherever we’re going, I’m sure I’ll love it.” It’ll forever scare him just how perceptive she was, especially when blindfolded.
The remainder of the ride continued mostly in silence, Aerith’s singing filling the void whenever she chose to sing along with the radio.
“Alright, we’re here.”
“Can I look now?”
“Not yet.”
Reno gently took back his hand and got out of the car, quickly walking around to open hers. She held out a hand for him to take, carefully leading her out.
“You trust me right?”
She giggles in response, “I wouldn’t have let you put a mask on me if I didn’t.”
“Point taken,” he laughs back, “just a few more steps.”
Aerith hums sweetly, cautiously following him as he gently guides her forward. They stop, Reno’s hand traveling up the length of her arm as he stands behind her, his hands resting on her shoulders. He leaned down till he was barely an inch from her ear.
“Now.”
The surprised gasp that spills from her lips makes all the planning worth it.
“Reno,” she whispers, “how did you-? When did-? It’s so beautiful.”
He chuckles, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and pulling her against him. “Some birdie may have told me you wanted to visit the garden.”
Aerith turns in his arms, her arms circling his neck, “I’ve been trying to get Zack to come with me for weeks, but this is better.”
She leans up and presses a gentle kiss to his lips. It wasn’t long but certainly sweet with a silent promise for more. Aerith leans back, green eyes twinkling in excitement.
“Can we go in?”
He snorts, “Nah, I just brought you here to admire the outside. We’re going home now.”
A pink tongue sticks out from between her lips as she grabs for his hand, tugging him towards the entrance.
He may not give a damn about flowers, but he certainly cared for the flower girl who loved them.

It’s a wonder how an entire forest can feel as though it were sad. He’d never thought much of plant life or the planet for that matter, but here he was contemplating on whether or not the feeling washing over him was truly the forest or...maybe it was something else.
Shaking his head of the thoughts, he turned back to his target. After all it can’t be considered stalking when it’s part of your job, and definitely not when your target is someone you care about.
