Sea Echoes. Oil on Canvas (ca. 1861) Lord Frederic Leighton (English, 1830–1896) painted this canvas as an early, sensuous experiment in Aestheticism. It marks a clear departure from the heavily detailed scenes of earlier Victorian painters. Leighton was particularly fond of this piece, describing it in a letter to his father as "very luminous."
