I had the extreme honor of being present at all YOI panels hosted this weekend and took a few notes on little statements and facts. First panel focused on their backgrounds going into the show. - They officially showed WTTM and teased about how we shouldn't have seen it yet if we we're "good" but obviously knew most of us had seen it. - They apparently came to Dallas and immediately went to the local figure skating rink. There they met Ashley Cain and Timothy Leduc, the US pairs bronze medalists and US 2014 Junior Champion Amber Glenn. - Talked favorite US Skaters. - Nathan Chen they mentioned being impressed with his recent season and his ability to achieve that. - Adam Rippon they talked about how he'd worked on the quad lutz since his 2011-2012 season. Talked about how for his program this year he's singing a song he wrote for it. They joked he's exceeded JJ Style because he sang his own song! Sayo also made special note that she loved his sheer blue outfit lol -Jason Brown they said you could not find anyone who could dance and transition like him. They confirmed that Leo is a homage to him and they said that we should root for Jason and Leo to land their quads because that would make them "very strong contenders." - Max Aaron they mentioned that like the skaters in the show he always works hard to improve on his past self. They all apparently love talking Figure Skating and had to stop themselves before that became the whole panel. Hiramatsu said even at work, they would often get distracted talking about Figure Skating. Sayo said that she'd decided since they were always talking about figure skating, they might as well make an anime out of it. On how they got together as a team, Sayo spoke about how she'd met Hiramatsu in 2002 working on Texhnolyze. Hiramatsu said he already admired Sayo from her "really over the top" storyboard for Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, so at the after party for Texhnolyze he approached her and said he "knew of her work" and he'd always thought it would be great to work on a full show with her. Kubo was doing her radio show and Sayo was a listener. When Kubo mentioned her manga serial coming to an end, Sayo approached her about working on Yuri on Ice. Before then, Kubo wasn't that familiar with Figure Skating but said Sayo was a very good mentor for it. Sayo was "a figure skating otaku I could trust." She apparently has this little chuckle that she does when talking and Kubo said it was "a trustable otaku chuckle." Sayo clarified that this chuckle is only for figure skating, her others are different. Pre-YOI Sayo was told she was scary to talk to in studio, but as they worked on YOI she smiled lots and was so passionate it made others find her more approachable. Hiramatsu then asked Sayo "How does my relationship with Kubo look to you?" Sayo said they "are very friendly and have a good connection" she also teased it was "a bit erotic to a point, but very good friends" there was so much laughter at this. Sayo talked about how she admired both Kubo and Hiramatsu's work but she wanted to challenge them to draw "many good looking men." Apparently her email to Hiramatsu in regards to working on YOI started with "Would you like to try drawing a lot of good looking men?" Kubo said she was thankful for Hiramatsu's involvement since without him it wouldn't be seen seriously and would be written off as "a figment of female imagination." By having it flow through his hands, it gave the show credibility that wouldn't be there without him. Kubo spoke of how his artistic skill was what gave it credibility and then mentioned his "artful male crotches." Hiramatsu laughed and held up their Makkachin tissue case to show off its crotch, before passing it to Kubo who did the same. We were all laughing so much about this. Hiramatsu then said he was intimidated at first to be asked to draw so many good looking men. He began to realize that the artistic view of cute girls can carry over to men. He said it was great fun to transition Kubo's art to animation. Sayo said she gave the animators instruction- " not many who focus on the beauty of men. Mostly just bishounen young boys." Her goal, and the goal of the YOI team, "was to bring beautiful men back into mainstream." They finished by saying working on YOI seemed daunting at the time, but in retrospect they realized how much fun they had. Kubo and Hiramatsu teased that it was all Sayo's fault we have all been duped into this fun.
