one of the worst writing tips i’ve ever read on this site was that someone said we shouldn’t bother with trans characters’ pre-transition lives and said they didn’t know their trans characters’ deadnames because “it isn’t my business”

yes it is.

you’re a writer. literally every detail about your characters is your business, including their history and their relationship to that history. you aren’t going to have well-rounded characters - trans or otherwise - unless you know those details, even if you never actually address them in your story.

Hello, finally I get to answer your message, after several events, on including properl sorting a large Goethe collection by form of text. ;)

Honest opinion about Goethe: Should only be sold in Reclam format, any bound version demands a sturdy shelf and strong arms. Also, I never want to read or hear Der Erlkönig again, I had it thrice in school, even in once in France, I can still recite it on demand - dear teachers, please, Goethe wrote other great poems, choose any but this one.

Actually, I have no strong feelings about Goethe, neither as a poet nor as a person (even though Schiller was, whilst being the wooden poet, the nicer person of the pair of them).

Reading Faust, made me understand why he’s considered genius in literature, German literature, history, and as a thinker. At the poodle’s core, only few works can measure up with the massive accumulation of thought on, disection of, societ in all the thinkable variables that existed in that time and still stand the testemony of time.On the point of his writing, his language; Goehte’s formulations are, in my eyes, mostly poetically wrapping up complex thoughts in one phrase, or pning them down on point with gentle violence of prosaic language - at least in works close to his heart’s, and/or politically-ideological interests.

On the other hand, not all his works are brilliant, prettily written, by times even superficial. Looking at you Meister Willie, and Iphigenie. Werther was kina prettly written but even as a teen I had the same questions towards Werther as I had to any other teen romance novel “What on earth is so special about Lotte that only she can be the only one to you? You come from a well stuatiated burgeois fantasy, and have good conections, you sure will find another nice girl, chill.”

All in all, many of his humanistic thoughts and quotes deservedly are fondly remembered and celebrated until today - those in which he put passion and thought into writing. Others… secured his income.

So this is the plan:

(Context for this: my country & in particular The Church + the conservatives have this whole conspiracy theory about The Gays that are trying to spread The Gender to destroy Traditional Families & Values)

I've definitely seen multiple people describe both of those as ableist.

fair enough. i see (some) people concerned about furthering the stigma of pds, but who also seem to understand dementia as involving bad things in a way they don’t want to claim about pds.

on *that* model, if we wonder if it’s dementia, then we’re talking about behaviors that can make presidenting (or anything really) difficult or impossible: forgetting things, becoming aggressive and petulant when someone notices you forget things, lying to cover up that you forget things, not realizing you forget things and getting mad when someone says you did, etc. all things that are asshole-y ways to act, but that are caused by the dementia.

but if we wonder whether it’s npd, we are “saying” “neurodivergence is bad.” “saying” that the person “can’t just be an asshole.”

instead of... “both of these are neurodivergences, and both of them could make doing this job difficult or impossible.” which i find strange.

disability can and does involve impairments, and it’s not all THAT infrequent that those impairments render someone unable to work, or unable to do an especially complex job with long hours, etc.

which is why i still think either could be true of him and don’t really see it as ableist to think about either or both of these things as possibilities.
