The founding father of Portugal as a nation, Afonso I, usually known as Afonso Henriques, The Conqueror (1109-1185). So much could be said about his reign, a period that is often fantasized and wrongly interpreted, since many tend to see the Middle Ages from a romantic and/or cinematographic perspective that has very little to do with the reality.
On Jul 25, 1139, After winning the Battle of Ourique, Afonso I became King of Portugal.
