The Tikoloshe is a South-African water-sprite resembling a hairy humanoid or bear. They are created by angry shamans through gruesome magical means, and are then set loose upon those who angered said shaman. The creature has the power to turn invisible by drinking water, and is known to bite off the toes of the sleeping, cause serious illness, and even asphyxiate people. The Tikoloshe supposedly gets its power from a hot poker thrust into its skull. This same method is used to destroy the creature’s brain during its creation as part of a ritual that also involves its eyes being gouged out and its tongue removed to ensure that the creature is unable to act independently, enslaving it to the shaman who created it. These acts also cause the creature’s body to shrivel, owing to its small size.
Some say that the creature can be escaped by sleeping on beds raised up by placing bricks beneath each of the legs. However, this may lead the creature to instead pester everyone else instead of its intended target. The only known way to get rid of the creature entirely is by hiring a witch-doctor to dispatch it.
