Cryptid of the Day: Grootslang
Description: Often depicted as part snake, part elephant, Grootslang is a serpent like creature seen and spoken about in Richtersveld South Africa. According to legend, the beast covets gems in caves, where victims can bargain for their freedom by offering a gem. The first person to claim to have seen the Grootslang was Hans Sauer back in 1867, near the Orange River.

day 15 of horror mythology: grootslang
grootslang is a creature that is reputed to dwell in a deep cave in the richtersveld, south africa. grootslang is said to be a huge serpent that dwells in a cave known as the "wonder hole" or the "bottomless pit." the serpent is said to be twelve to fifteen meters in length, and to leave a meter wide track. some legends describe it as having diamonds in its eye sockets. according to a version of the story reported among the bushmen, the grootslang is older than the world and will protect its treasure for eternity. another form of the myth states that the grootslang is a spirit tasked with guarding its cavern from treasure seekers, and that its presence is marked by an overpowering "sense of evil."

"The grootslang, which features in South African mythology, is a type of gigantic serpent with the trunk, tusks, and ears of an elephant. These monsters are believed to have been created by the gods themselves at the beginning of the world. However, the gods realized they made a terrible mistake by making something so vicious, strong, and insatiably hungry. They decided to split the grootslangs into two separate creatures: the elephant and the snake. One grootslang escaped and is said to live in Richtersveld in South Africa, deep within a cave filled with diamonds and jewels."
It would've been more realistic if I colored all the gems the same or similar, but I often feel compelled to use more variety than that. Still, looking back, I wish I'd used a different color than bright yellow for that one cluster.
Inspired by @crimson-cassowaries's Villains as monsters and my brainrot on giant reptiles, Falin-esque chimeras and body horror!
My monster-sona is based off the grootslang from African mythology. The grootslang is known for dwelling in the Richtersveld river. It’s also known for its strength and intelligence. It’s usually depicted as a hybrid of a python and an elephant, the head being an elephant’s while the body is of a python. I took elements from both while keeping human elements since, you know, I’m a human. I also went to the extreme of this (TikTok) trend because i love when a character transforms into something so hideous that it turns the stomachs of those around them. The characters friend shave to retreat because they are so vile. The characters lover has to remind themself of who transformed because of how grotesque the character has become. Love it. It’s peak design. Furthermore, I choose a creature/monster from mythology because I’m a nerd and African mythology is the tits.
"Gasp where am I.
Cthulhu: Why don't you join us
What?
Phobia: October is over we are here to chill
I don't understand
Hatman: Pull up a chair. We saved a plate for you.
As the month of October comes to a close. You feel the monsters power over the world calm down just for a moment. Greeted by the many monsters who once attacked you, you feel unerved as they treat you with respect. You take a step and look for an open seat. Many scents and sounds fill the air. Steak, turkey, fresh baked bread, and you're pretty sure you saw sushi the size of a house. The hovering of Jean jacket, the talk from le spectres, the small his from the alligators, and the splashing of the water fountain made the place come to life.
Cthulhu: Ha chez cthul-hu, my pride and joy after my successful book writing career. Cthulhu asks for you to read his book on the house but the minute you do you wake up from this nightmare turned dream."
Oh my gosh finally done. I wanted this done by October 31st but my ambitions were to high. I doubt yall will see one of these again. Thank you all for sticking through these weeks with me. I will try to upload every Thursday if I can keep up with it. This will not be the last you see of me. (The tags took me forever)
